Cycling typically begins in late autumn and extends through the winter months, lasting approximately eight to twelve weeks.

To initiate a breeding cycle, gradually reduce nighttime temperatures over the course of two weeks to approximately 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while allowing daytime temperatures to remain in the low to mid 80s. This creates a distinct day-night temperature differential that signals the snakes' reproductive systems to activate. Introduction & Mating

Introduce the male into the female's enclosure rather than the reverse, as this places the female in familiar territory where she is most likely to be receptive. Initial introductions should be supervised to ensure that the encounter does not become aggressive. While Children's Pythons are generally docile, breeding introductions can occasionally produce defensive responses from either party, and separation may be necessary if significant aggression occurs.

Successful courtship typically involves the male approaching the female, aligning his body alongside hers, and initiating contact with chin-rubbing and body undulations. He may use his spurs, the small vestigial claws near his vent, to stimulate the female during courtship. If the female is receptive, she will raise her tail and allow copulation, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

Multiple breeding sessions over a period of several weeks increase the likelihood of successful fertilization. Some keepers leave the pair together continuously during the breeding period, but this approach requires close monitoring to ensure that neither animal becomes stressed or stops feeding for an extended period.

Egg Development & Laying

Following successful mating and ovulation, the female Children's Python enters a gestation period of approximately 40 to 60 days before laying her eggs. During this time, you will notice her body taking on a distinctly lumpy, irregular shape as the developing eggs become visible through the skin. She may spend more time on the warm end of the enclosure and frequently invert her position, resting with her belly facing upward, to optimize heat transfer to the developing eggs.

Feeding behavior during gestation varies among individuals. Some females continue to accept small meals throughout the gestation period, while others refuse food entirely from shortly after ovulation until after laying. Do not attempt to force-feed a gravid female; instead, offer small prey items periodically and respect her decision if she declines. Her body is drawing heavily on stored energy reserves during this time, and forced feeding can cause regurgitation and additional stress.

As the laying date approaches, provide a suitable egg-laying box within the enclosure. A covered container filled with damp sphagnum moss or vermiculite gives the female a humid, secure location in which to deposit her clutch. The box should be large enough for her to coil comfortably inside but small enough to retain humidity. Most females will begin investigating the egg box several days before laying, spending increasing amounts of time inside.

Children's Pythons typically produce clutches of 5 to 15 eggs, though first-time mothers may lay fewer. The female will coil around her freshly laid eggs, and many Children's Python females exhibit maternal incubation behavior, remaining coiled around the clutch and shivering to generate heat. While maternal incubation is a fascinating natural behavior, most breeders opt to remove the eggs and incubate them artificially for more consistent and controllable results.

Incubation & Hatching

Artificial incubation of Children's Python eggs is straightforward with the proper equipment. A dedicated reptile egg incubator set to approximately 88 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit provides the ideal temperature for development. Eggs should be placed on a substrate of damp vermiculite, perlite, or a purpose-made incubation medium, with the substrate mixed at a ratio of roughly one part water to one part medium by weight. The eggs should sit on the surface of the substrate rather than being buried.

Mark the top of each egg with a soft pencil or non-toxic marker immediately upon collection. Reptile eggs should not be rotated after they have been laid, as the developing embryo attaches to the upper membrane and rotation can cause fatal detachment. Handle eggs gently and minimize movement once they are positioned in the incubator.

The incubation period for Children's Python eggs is typically 50 to 60 days at the recommended temperature. During this time, check the incubator regularly to ensure temperature stability and adequate humidity. Healthy eggs will gradually swell slightly and develop a taut, white appearance. Hatching begins when the first neonates slice through the eggshell using their egg tooth, a small temporary structure on the snout designed for this purpose. The process can take 24 to 48 hours from the first pip to full emergence, and it is critical that you resist the urge to assist. Premature intervention can injure the hatchling or separate it from remaining yolk resources. Once a hatchling has fully emerged and its umbilical area has closed, it can be transferred to its individual hatchling enclosure.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Every breeder should critically evaluate their motivations and ensure that they are contributing positively to the captive population of the species rather than adding to an oversaturated market where animals may end up neglected or rehomed repeatedly.

Responsible breeding begins with selecting healthy, unrelated breeding stock with known lineage. Avoid breeding animals with histories of health problems, congenital defects, or neurological issues, as these traits can be passed to offspring. If you are unsure of the genetic background of your snakes, consult with experienced breeders or a reptile veterinarian before proceeding.

Have a clear plan for every hatchling before you commit to breeding. This may involve pre-arranged agreements with reputable pet stores, direct sales to vetted private buyers, or retention within your own collection. Responsible breeders screen potential buyers to ensure they have the knowledge and resources to care for a snake that may live for two decades or more. The physical toll of breeding on the female should also be weighed carefully.
