Ferret kits are born after a gestation period of roughly 42 days, and they enter the world in an extremely underdeveloped state. Newborn kits are blind, deaf, and nearly hairless, weighing only about 6 to 12 grams at birth. Their skin may appear translucent and pink, though some kits will show faint pigmentation hints that indicate their future coat color. The jill, or mother ferret, will immediately begin cleaning each kit as it arrives, stimulating breathing and circulation in the process.
During the first 24 hours, the most critical task is ensuring that every kit in the litter successfully latches onto a nipple and begins nursing. Colostrum, the first milk produced by the jill, is rich in antibodies and essential nutrients that provide passive immunity to the kits during their most vulnerable period. Kits that fail to nurse within the first few hours face significantly higher risks of infection and failure to thrive. Observing the litter without excessive handling is important, as the jill may become stressed and reject or harm her young if disturbed too frequently.
The nesting area should be kept warm, quiet, and dimly lit. Newborn ferrets cannot regulate their own body temperature, so they rely entirely on their mother's body heat and the ambient warmth of the nest. A room temperature of approximately 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for the first several days. Drafts, loud noises, and sudden temperature changes should be avoided at all costs. Bedding should be soft but not loose enough to entangle or suffocate the tiny kits.
It is wise to count the kits and make note of any that appear significantly smaller or weaker than the rest. Runts may need supplemental feeding if they are consistently pushed away from the nipples by larger siblings. However, intervening too early can do more harm than good, so patience and careful observation are the best tools during these first hours.
