A gentle abdominal palpation by the owner or, ideally, a veterinary examination within 24 to 48 hours of delivery helps confirm that the jill has passed all kits and placentas.

The kits should be checked daily for adequate weight gain, proper nursing, and overall health. Healthy kits should feel warm, firm, and plump, and they should respond to touch with small movements and vocalizations. A kit that feels cold, appears gaunt, or fails to gain weight may be having difficulty competing for a nipple and may need supplemental feeding. Weighing each kit daily on a gram-accurate scale provides the most objective measure of progress.

Cage cleaning during the postpartum period should be done carefully and efficiently to minimize stress to the jill. Remove soiled bedding and replace it with clean materials quickly and quietly, handling the kits as little as possible during the first week. As the kits grow and the jill becomes more comfortable with the routine, handling can increase gradually. The goal during the early postpartum period is to balance hygiene with the jill's need for a stable, undisturbed environment.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

The decision to breed ferrets carries ethical responsibilities that extend well beyond the immediate care of the jill and her kits. Responsible breeding begins with a clear understanding of why you are breeding and what you hope to contribute to the ferret community. Breeding should aim to produce healthy, well-tempered ferrets with strong genetic backgrounds, not to generate income or satisfy curiosity about the birthing process. The welfare of the animals must always take precedence over the breeder's desires.
