Capybaras reach full physical maturity between eighteen and twenty-four months of age, at which point their skeletal growth is complete and their body mass stabilizes within the adult range of approximately 35 to 66 kilograms. Sexual dimorphism is modest in this species. Males tend to be slightly heavier than females on average and develop a more prominent morillo gland, the sebaceous scent gland situated on the dorsal surface of the snout that appears as a dark, raised oval. Females may carry slightly more body fat proportionally, particularly in the flank and abdominal regions, which serves as an energy reserve during pregnancy and lactation. Both sexes share the same barrel-shaped body form, short muscular legs, and blunt head profile that make the capybara instantly recognizable.
The adult coat consists of sparse, coarse guard hairs that lie flat against the body and provide minimal insulation compared to the dense fur of many other rodent species. This thin coat is an adaptation to the species' semi-aquatic lifestyle and tropical to subtropical range, as thick fur would retain excessive moisture and impede drying after immersion. In temperate climates where capybaras are kept outside their native range, keepers must recognize that the coat offers limited protection against cold. Adult capybaras maintain their core temperature largely through behavioral thermoregulation, seeking warm shelters, basking in sunlight, and immersing in water to cool down rather than relying on pelage insulation.
A healthy adult capybara in prime condition presents with clear, bright eyes, clean nostrils free of discharge, evenly worn incisors that meet squarely, and a smooth coat without patches of hair loss, scabbing, or excessive oiliness. The body should be well-fleshed without visible ribs or hip bones, but also without deep fat rolls or a pendulous abdomen that suggests obesity. Locomotion should be fluid and symmetrical, with no favoring of limbs, stiffness, or reluctance to move. In the water, a healthy adult swims with smooth, coordinated strokes of the hind legs and can submerge completely for brief periods without distress.
Maintaining prime condition through the adult years requires a consistent management approach that integrates nutrition, exercise, social interaction, and preventive veterinary care. The adult capybara's relatively long lifespan for a rodent, eight to twelve years in well-managed captivity, means that keepers must sustain high-quality husbandry practices over many years. Lapses in diet, habitat maintenance, or health monitoring that might be tolerable in a shorter-lived species can accumulate into serious chronic conditions in an animal that may live a decade or more.
