Tokay Geckos reach sexual maturity between approximately 12 and 24 months of age, though physical maturity does not automatically mean an animal is ready for breeding. Both the male and female should be in excellent health, at a stable and appropriate body weight, and free of parasites or other active health conditions before any breeding attempt is considered. A pre-breeding veterinary examination with a fecal parasite screen is a worthwhile investment that helps ensure both animals are in suitable condition.

Sex determination in Tokay Geckos is typically straightforward once the animals have matured. Males are generally larger and more heavily built than females, with broader heads and more prominent jowls. The most reliable anatomical indicator is the presence of well-developed femoral pores — a line of enlarged, waxy pores running along the underside of each hind leg — which are visible in males and either absent or much less prominent in females. Males also have a noticeable hemipenal bulge at the base of the tail.

Before pairing, consider whether you have a realistic plan for the offspring. Tokay Geckos can produce multiple clutches per year, and each clutch typically contains two eggs. Without a plan for housing, raising, and rehoming hatchlings, breeding can quickly result in more animals than you can responsibly care for. Responsible breeding begins with an honest assessment of demand and your capacity to provide for any offspring you produce.

Both the male and female should be in peak nutritional condition before breeding. Increase the female's calcium supplementation in the weeks leading up to pairing, as egg production places significant demands on her calcium reserves. A female that enters breeding with depleted calcium stores is at increased risk for egg binding, metabolic bone disease, and other serious complications.

Mating Behavior

Introducing a male and female Tokay Gecko for breeding requires careful observation and a readiness to separate them if the interaction becomes dangerously aggressive. Tokay Geckos are territorial and may react with hostility to an unfamiliar animal in their space, regardless of sex. Many breeders introduce the female to the male's enclosure or use a neutral enclosure that neither animal has established as territory. Watch the pair closely during the first several hours of introduction.

Courtship behavior in Tokay Geckos typically involves the male approaching the female with a series of vocalizations and head movements. He may gently bite the female on the nape of the neck during mating, which is normal behavior. However, if the interaction escalates to sustained chasing, violent biting that draws blood, or one animal clearly attempting to flee with no respite, the pair should be separated immediately and the introduction attempted again after a cooling-off period of several days to a week.

Successful mating may occur within hours of introduction or may take several days. Some pairs will coexist relatively peacefully and mate multiple times over a period of weeks. Others may need to be paired and separated repeatedly. Every individual is different, and patience is essential. Providing ample hiding spots, visual barriers, and multiple climbing areas within the breeding enclosure gives the female retreat options and reduces the intensity of male pursuit.

Once mating has been observed, monitor the female for signs of developing eggs. Gravid females often show visible swelling in the lower abdomen, and the outline of eggs may become visible through the skin in lighter-colored individuals. Appetite may fluctuate, with some females eating voraciously in the early stages of egg development and then reducing food intake as the eggs take up more abdominal space. Ensure the female has continuous access to calcium supplementation throughout this period.

Egg Laying & Incubation

Tokay Geckos lay hard-shelled eggs, which distinguishes them from many other gecko species that produce soft, leathery eggs. The female typically deposits a clutch of two eggs, adhering them to a hard surface within the enclosure such as the inside of a cork bark tube, the glass wall, or the underside of a hide. The adhesive is extremely strong, and attempting to remove freshly laid eggs from the surface they are attached to almost always destroys them.

For keepers who wish to incubate eggs artificially, one approach is to provide removable laying surfaces such as sections of PVC pipe or small ceramic tiles that can be transferred to an incubator with the eggs still attached. Alternatively, some breeders allow the female to guard the eggs in the enclosure, which is a natural behavior for this species. Female Tokay Geckos are known to be attentive egg guarders, remaining near the eggs and defending them aggressively against any perceived threat, including the keeper's hands during maintenance.

If incubating artificially, maintain a temperature of 80 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit with moderate humidity. The incubation period ranges from approximately 60 to 200 days depending on temperature, with warmer temperatures generally producing shorter incubation times. Unlike some reptile species, Tokay Gecko sex is genetically determined rather than temperature-dependent, so incubation temperature does not influence the sex ratio of hatchlings.

Monitor eggs throughout incubation for signs of viability. Healthy eggs maintain their shape and color, gradually developing a slightly translucent quality as the embryo grows. Infertile or dead eggs will typically begin to discolor, collapse, or develop mold within the first few weeks. Remove any clearly non-viable eggs to prevent mold from spreading to adjacent fertile eggs. Do not discard eggs prematurely based solely on appearance, however, as some eggs that appear questionable can still produce healthy hatchlings.

Post-Laying Care

After egg deposition, the breeding female requires attentive care to support her recovery. Egg production is metabolically demanding and draws heavily on calcium, fat, and protein reserves. Increase feeding frequency temporarily, offering food every day or every other day with generous calcium supplementation until the female has regained her pre-breeding body condition. Monitor her weight closely and compare it to her baseline to gauge recovery progress.

If the female is being kept with the male, she may become gravid again relatively quickly, as Tokay Geckos can produce multiple clutches throughout the breeding season, which can extend from late winter through summer depending on environmental cues. Repeated clutch production without adequate recovery time between cycles can lead to progressive calcium depletion, weight loss, and overall decline in the female's health. Responsible breeders separate the pair after one or two clutches to allow the female a full recovery period before any subsequent breeding.

Egg binding, also known as dystocia, is a serious complication that can occur when a gravid female is unable to deposit her eggs. Signs include visible straining, prolonged swelling without egg deposition, lethargy, loss of appetite, and a hunched or distressed posture. Egg binding is a veterinary emergency, as retained eggs can lead to infection, organ compression, and death if not addressed promptly. If you suspect egg binding, contact a reptile veterinarian immediately rather than attempting home remedies.

The male typically requires no special post-breeding care beyond normal maintenance, though monitoring his weight and condition is still advisable. In rare cases, aggressive mating behavior can result in minor injuries to the male as well as the female. Inspect both animals for bite wounds, abrasions, or areas of missing skin after separating them, and treat any injuries with veterinarian-recommended wound care to prevent infection.

Hatchling Preparation

Well before the expected hatch date, prepare individual hatchling enclosures so they are ready the moment the first egg opens. Each hatchling needs its own small, secure setup — a plastic enclosure or small terrarium with ventilation, damp paper towel substrate, a small hide, shallow water dish, and a heat source controlled by a thermostat. Having multiple enclosures prepared in advance prevents the scramble of setting up housing for surprise hatchlings at inconvenient times.

Stock up on appropriately sized feeder insects before the hatch date. Pinhead crickets, flightless fruit flies, and very small roach nymphs should be readily available. Hatchling Tokay Geckos begin feeding within two to three days of hatching, and having feeders on hand ensures you do not miss the critical first feeding window. Calcium powder, vitamin D3 supplement, and multivitamin powder should also be on hand for immediate use.

If the eggs were incubated in the parent's enclosure under the female's guard, remove the hatchlings promptly after they emerge. Adult Tokay Geckos, including the mother, will readily consume hatchlings if given the opportunity. The small size of a newly hatched Tokay Gecko makes it appear as prey to any adult in the enclosure, and the hatchling has no defense against an animal many times its size. Use a soft cloth or small container to gently capture and relocate hatchlings without injuring their delicate bodies.

Document each hatchling with a record that includes hatch date, initial weight and length, which clutch and pairing it came from, and any notable observations about its appearance or behavior. This information is valuable for tracking the development of individual animals and for providing accurate histories to future owners if the hatchlings are rehomed. Responsible record-keeping is a hallmark of ethical breeding practices.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

The reptile hobby and trade have significant ethical dimensions, and every breeder has a role in promoting practices that prioritize animal welfare, genetic health, and conservation. Before producing offspring, ask yourself whether each hatchling you bring into the world has a clear path to a responsible, knowledgeable home.

Genetic diversity is an important consideration in any captive breeding program. Breeding closely related animals increases the risk of inbreeding depression, which can manifest as reduced fertility, developmental abnormalities, weakened immune function, and shorter lifespans. Maintain records of the lineage of your breeding stock and avoid pairing animals with known close genetic relationships. Acquiring unrelated breeding stock from reputable breeders who maintain their own lineage records helps broaden the genetic base of your colony.

The Tokay Gecko occupies a complicated position in the global pet trade. Wild populations face collection pressure in parts of Southeast Asia, driven by both the pet trade and traditional medicine markets. Supporting captive-bred animals over wild-caught imports, and producing captive-bred offspring yourself, contributes to reducing demand for wild collection. When selling or rehoming hatchlings, clearly identify them as captive-bred and provide care information to new owners to ensure a smooth transition and ongoing quality of life.

Screen potential buyers or adopters carefully. Tokay Geckos are not beginner-friendly reptiles, and their defensive temperament, specific humidity and temperature requirements, and long lifespan make them a poor choice for casual or impulse pet owners. Providing a basic care guide with each animal, being available to answer questions after the sale, and declining to sell to individuals who cannot demonstrate adequate knowledge or housing are all reasonable steps that responsible breeders take to protect the welfare of the animals they produce.
