Determining the sex of an Argentine Tegu can be accomplished through several methods, with the most reliable being cloacal probing performed by an experienced veterinarian or herpetologist. Visual cues become more apparent as the tegu reaches maturity — males tend to be larger overall, with broader heads, more prominent jowls, and thicker tail bases due to the hemipenal bulges. Females are generally more slender and lack the pronounced jaw musculature of males, though there is overlap in body proportions that makes visual sexing alone unreliable in some individuals.

Seasonal Cycling & Mating Behavior

Argentine Tegu breeding is strongly seasonal, driven by the natural cycles of brumation and emergence. In captivity, the breeding season typically begins in the spring following the conclusion of brumation, usually between March and May in the Northern Hemisphere. The hormonal surge that accompanies emergence from dormancy triggers mating behaviors in both sexes, and the window for successful copulation is relatively narrow.

Males emerge from brumation with heightened aggression and a single-minded interest in locating a mate. They become restless, patrol their enclosures constantly, and may refuse food in favor of searching for a female. If a male detects the scent of a receptive female — even from an adjacent enclosure — he may become extremely agitated, scratching at walls, pacing, and displaying territorial behaviors. These hormonal shifts are intense and should be anticipated by the keeper.

When the pair is introduced, the male will typically approach the female with rapid tongue flicking, chin rubbing, and body pressing. He may grip the female by the neck or hindquarters during copulation, which can appear rough but is normal behavior. The mating process itself is usually brief, lasting only a few minutes, though the male may attempt to mate repeatedly over the course of several days.

Supervisory oversight during introductions is critical. While most pairings proceed without incident, aggressive encounters can occur, particularly if the female is not receptive or if the male becomes overly forceful. Separate the animals immediately if genuine aggression — sustained biting, violent rolling, or one animal attempting to flee and being pursued relentlessly — occurs. Egg Development & Laying

Incubation

Mark the top of each egg with a soft pencil before moving it to maintain the correct orientation throughout the incubation period.

The incubation medium should be a moisture-retaining substrate such as vermiculite or perlite mixed with water at a ratio of approximately one part water to one part substrate by weight. The eggs should be partially buried in the medium with the tops exposed. The incubator should maintain a stable temperature between 84 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity levels near 90 percent. Healthy fertile eggs will swell slightly as the embryo develops and may show visible veining when candled with a flashlight against the shell.

Infertile or non-viable eggs will typically become apparent within the first two weeks. They may develop mold, turn yellow, or collapse inward. Remove these eggs promptly to prevent contamination of the remaining clutch. As the hatch date approaches, fertile eggs may dimple or sweat, and the hatchlings will begin to pip through the shell using their egg tooth. Resist the urge to assist — hatchlings need to emerge on their own to ensure they have absorbed the remaining yolk.

Postpartum & Post-Hatch Care

After laying, the female Argentine Tegu will be physically depleted and requires attentive recovery care. Offer food within 24 to 48 hours of laying, starting with easily digestible, nutrient-dense items such as raw egg and small, soft-bodied insects. Gradually reintroduce her full diet over the following week, with continued emphasis on calcium-rich foods to replenish the reserves she expended during egg production. Monitor the female closely for several days after laying. Signs of retained eggs — continued swelling, straining, or lethargy that persists beyond 48 hours — require immediate veterinary evaluation. Most females recover fully within one to two weeks and return to their normal activity levels and appetite. Avoid handling the female excessively during the first few days post-laying, as she may be more defensive or irritable than usual.

Once the hatchlings emerge from the incubator, they should be set up individually or in small groups in appropriately sized enclosures with the same environmental parameters described in the newborn care guide. Hatchlings are independent from the moment of emergence and do not require parental care. They should not be housed with the adults, as even well-tempered adult tegus may injure or consume small hatchlings.

The Argentine Tegu is classified as an invasive species in several regions, most notably in the southeastern United States where established feral populations pose significant ecological threats. Breeders have a responsibility to sell only to informed, committed buyers and to educate purchasers about the long-term commitment involved.
