An adult Reed Frog vivarium represents a long-term commitment to a living ecosystem, and thoughtful design at this stage eliminates the need for the frequent upgrades and transitions that characterize the juvenile period. The enclosure for a colony of four to six adult Reed Frogs should be a vertically oriented glass terrarium with minimum dimensions of 18 by 18 by 24 inches, providing ample climbing space and allowing the keeper to create the layered microhabitat structure that these arboreal frogs require. Exo Terra, Zoo Med, and similar manufacturers produce front-opening terrariums in these dimensions with built-in ventilation strips and cable ports that simplify the installation of lighting, heating, and misting equipment.
The bioactive vivarium approach has become the standard of care for adult Reed Frogs and involves establishing a self-sustaining ecosystem within the enclosure where living plants, microfauna, and beneficial microorganisms work together to process waste, maintain humidity, and create a naturalistic environment. The substrate should follow a false-bottom construction with a two-inch drainage layer of lightweight expanded clay aggregate separated from the planting medium by a fiberglass mesh screen. Above the screen, three to four inches of a tropical vivarium soil blend supports plant root systems and houses the cleanup crew of springtails and tropical isopods that consume frog waste, decaying plant material, and mold before these can degrade the enclosure conditions.
Plant selection for the adult vivarium should prioritize species that thrive in high humidity, tolerate moderate light, and provide the broad-leaved perching surfaces that Reed Frogs prefer. Epipremnum aureum, commonly known as pothos, is a nearly indestructible choice that produces large, waxy leaves ideal for resting frogs. Small bromeliads of the Neoregelia genus provide both perching sites and water-holding leaf axils that frogs will use for hydration and, in breeding situations, as egg deposition sites. Ficus pumila and Selaginella species create attractive ground cover and vertical accents, while sections of preserved or living moss soften hardscape elements and contribute to humidity regulation. All plants should be sourced from pesticide-free suppliers, as systemic insecticide residues in commercially grown ornamental plants are a documented cause of sudden death in captive amphibians.
Hardscape elements including cork bark flats, manzanita or Malaysian driftwood branches, and sections of bamboo provide structural complexity and additional climbing surfaces. Cork bark is particularly useful because it is lightweight, naturally rot-resistant, and has a textured surface that Reed Frogs can grip easily. Branches and bark should be positioned to create a network of pathways connecting the lower, mid-level, and upper zones of the vivarium, encouraging the frogs to utilize the entire vertical space rather than clustering in a single area. A small water feature such as a shallow pool at the base of the vivarium, created by allowing the false bottom drainage area to retain an inch or two of water accessible through a gap in the substrate, provides a drinking and soaking site without requiring a separate water dish that occupies valuable floor space.
