During this phase, the iguana's body proportions shift noticeably. The head becomes broader and more triangular, the limbs grow thicker and more muscular, and the dorsal spines along the back become more prominent. The dewlap beneath the chin expands, particularly in males, and the subtympanic shield, the large round scale on the side of the head near the jaw, becomes increasingly visible. Shedding frequency accelerates during periods of rapid growth. A juvenile iguana may shed portions of its skin every four to six weeks. Unlike snakes, iguanas do not shed in a single piece. Exercise & Enrichment

Juvenile green iguanas are naturally active and curious, and an enriched environment contributes directly to physical health and psychological wellbeing. In addition to vertical climbing opportunities within the enclosure, supervised free-roaming time in an iguana-proofed room provides exercise, mental stimulation, and bonding opportunities. Ensure the room is warm, free of hazards such as exposed wiring or toxic plants, and that the iguana cannot access spaces where it could become trapped.

Outdoor time, when weather permits, offers unparalleled benefits. Natural sunlight provides full-spectrum UVB that no artificial bulb can fully replicate, and exposure to fresh air and natural sensory stimuli enriches the iguana's experience. Use a secure outdoor enclosure or harness designed for reptiles. Never leave the iguana unattended outdoors, as predators, temperature drops, and escape are all real risks.

Within the enclosure, rotate furnishings and rearrange branches periodically to encourage exploration. Introduce novel items such as non-toxic artificial plants, textured surfaces, or food puzzles that require the iguana to work slightly harder to access its meal. These small changes prevent the monotony that can lead to lethargy and disengagement in captive reptiles.

Swimming and soaking are natural behaviors for green iguanas, which are strong swimmers in the wild. Offer access to a large, shallow tub of lukewarm water for supervised soaking sessions several times per week. Many juveniles learn to enjoy swimming and will use the opportunity for exercise. Soaking also supports hydration and aids in shedding. Always supervise water time and ensure the iguana can easily exit the water on its own.

Socialization & Continued Taming

The juvenile phase is the most consequential period for socialization. An iguana that is handled regularly, gently, and consistently during this stage is far more likely to develop into a calm, manageable adult. Conversely, a juvenile that is rarely handled or subjected to stressful interactions will become increasingly difficult to work with as it gains size and strength.

Increase handling sessions to fifteen to thirty minutes daily as the juvenile grows. Continue to support the full body, allowing the iguana to perch on your arm, shoulder, or chest. Speak calmly and move slowly. Avoid sudden movements, loud noises, or chasing the iguana around its enclosure, all of which erode trust. If the iguana becomes agitated during a session, remain calm and hold steady rather than immediately returning it, which teaches it that aggression results in being left alone.

Introduce the juvenile to a variety of people, environments, and experiences in a controlled manner. Exposure to different rooms in the house, calm visitors, and gentle handling by multiple family members broadens the iguana's comfort zone. Avoid overwhelming the animal with too many new stimuli at once. Gradual, positive exposure is always more effective than flooding.

Food rewards continue to be a powerful tool for building positive associations. Offer a favorite treat by hand during or after handling sessions. Over time, the iguana will associate your presence and touch with positive outcomes. Some keepers find that their iguanas develop genuine preferences for specific people and will voluntarily approach them, a sign of successful socialization that builds the foundation for a rewarding long-term relationship.

Common Health Concerns

Metabolic bone disease remains the primary health threat during the juvenile phase and warrants continued vigilance. Even iguanas that received adequate care as hatchlings can develop MBD if calcium supplementation or UVB exposure lapses during the demanding juvenile growth period. Regular veterinary checkups that include physical assessment of bone density and limb strength help catch early signs before permanent damage occurs.

Respiratory infections are the second most common health issue in juvenile iguanas. These infections are almost always linked to environmental problems: temperatures that are too low, humidity that is excessive without adequate ventilation, or drafty enclosure placement. Symptoms include wheezing, nasal discharge, open-mouth breathing, and reduced appetite. Respiratory infections require veterinary treatment, as they do not resolve on their own and can become life-threatening.

Internal parasites continue to be a concern, particularly for iguanas acquired from sources with unknown husbandry histories. Annual fecal examinations are recommended, and any iguana showing unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, or abnormal droppings should be tested promptly. Treatment for common reptile parasites is straightforward when caught early but can become complicated if the parasite load is allowed to grow unchecked.

Skin and shedding problems are also common during the juvenile phase. Retained shed around the toes, tail tip, and dorsal spines can constrict blood flow and lead to tissue death if not addressed. Fungal and bacterial skin infections can develop in enclosures with poor hygiene or improper humidity.
