Green iguanas reach sexual maturity between two and four years of age, though the exact timing varies based on the individual's size, health, and environmental conditions. Males typically become reproductively capable slightly earlier than females. Physical indicators of maturity in males include enlargement of the femoral pores on the inner thighs, development of the hemipenal bulges at the tail base, increased size of the jowls and subtympanic shield, and a more prominent dewlap.

Females signal reproductive maturity through behavioral changes during the breeding season, including restlessness, reduced appetite, and digging behavior even in the absence of a male. An adult female in good body condition will typically develop follicles annually as part of her natural hormonal cycle. This occurs regardless of whether she has been paired with a male, meaning that even solo female iguanas must be managed for reproductive health.

Before considering breeding, both the male and female should be in excellent overall health. A pre-breeding veterinary examination should include blood work, fecal analysis, and radiographs to confirm that neither animal carries parasites, infections, or metabolic deficiencies that could compromise the health of the parents or the viability of the offspring. Breeding an animal that is underweight, nutritionally deficient, or chronically ill is irresponsible and can be fatal.

Age alone does not determine breeding readiness. A two-year-old iguana that has reached sexual maturity but is undersized due to poor early nutrition should not be bred. The physical demands of reproduction, particularly egg production and laying for females, require substantial metabolic reserves. A female should be at a healthy weight with strong bone density before undertaking the strain of producing a clutch of eggs.

Mating Behavior & Seasonal Cycles

Green iguana breeding behavior is strongly seasonal and is triggered by changes in photoperiod and temperature. In captivity, the breeding season typically falls during the cooler months, roughly October through February in the Northern Hemisphere. As the days shorten and temperatures drop slightly, hormonal changes activate breeding behaviors in both sexes.

Males undergo dramatic behavioral and physical changes during breeding season. Their skin may develop an orange or rusty tinge, particularly along the limbs, dewlap, and dorsal spines. Aggression increases markedly, and males may become difficult to handle. Head-bobbing displays become more frequent and exaggerated, and the male may patrol his enclosure restlessly, displaying at anything he perceives as a rival or potential mate. These behaviors are hormonally driven and should be expected and managed rather than punished.

Mating itself can be rough. The male restrains the female by gripping the back of her neck with his jaws and positioning his body alongside hers. Copulation typically lasts several minutes but can extend longer. Observe mating encounters closely to ensure the female is not injured. If the male becomes overly aggressive, causing visible wounds or extreme stress, separate them immediately and reconsider the pairing.

After successful mating, the pair should be separated. Continued cohabitation during the post-mating period often leads to ongoing harassment of the female, who needs calm and nutritional recovery as she enters the egg development phase. Males may remain in breeding mode for weeks after mating and will continue to pursue the female if given access, adding unnecessary stress during a metabolically demanding time.

Egg Development & Gravid Care

Following successful mating, the female enters the gravid period during which fertilized eggs develop internally. This phase lasts approximately 60 to 90 days, during which the female's nutritional and environmental needs change significantly. The developing eggs place enormous demands on her calcium reserves and overall energy stores, making this one of the most physiologically demanding periods of her life.

A gravid female typically shows visible abdominal swelling as the eggs grow. She may become less active and spend more time basking to maintain the elevated body temperature needed for proper egg development. Appetite patterns often fluctuate: some females eat voraciously during the early gravid period and then reduce food intake dramatically in the final weeks before laying as the eggs compress the digestive tract.

Increase calcium supplementation during the gravid period, as the formation of eggshells draws heavily on the female's calcium stores. Inadequate calcium during this phase can lead to soft-shelled eggs, egg binding, and metabolic bone disease in the mother. Offer highly nutritious, calcium-rich greens at every feeding, and continue vitamin D3 supplementation to support calcium absorption. Hydration is equally critical, so maintain regular soaking and ensure constant access to clean water.

Radiographic imaging by your veterinarian can confirm the number of eggs and their development progress. This information is valuable for planning the laying event and identifying potential complications early. A normal clutch for a green iguana ranges from 20 to 70 eggs, with the average falling around 30 to 40. First-time mothers typically produce smaller clutches than experienced females.

Egg Laying & Nesting

Providing a suitable nesting site is one of the most critical aspects of breeding green iguanas. A gravid female that cannot find an acceptable place to deposit her eggs may retain them, leading to a life-threatening condition known as egg binding or dystocia. The nesting area should be a large container or designated space filled with a moist, diggable substrate such as a mix of topsoil and sand to a depth of at least 18 to 24 inches.

As laying time approaches, the female will begin actively searching for a nesting site. She may dig exploratory holes in the substrate, test different areas of the enclosure, and become increasingly restless. Provide the nesting container several weeks before the expected laying date so she has time to investigate and accept the site. Privacy is important: place the nesting area in a quiet location with visual barriers to reduce disturbance during the laying process.

The laying process itself can take several hours to an entire day. The female digs a burrow in the substrate, deposits the eggs, and then covers them. Avoid interfering during this process unless the female shows clear signs of distress such as prolonged straining without producing eggs, visible exhaustion, or bleeding. If laying stalls for more than 24 hours after active straining has begun, contact your veterinarian immediately, as veterinary intervention may be necessary to prevent fatal complications.

After laying, the female will be physically depleted. She may appear noticeably thinner and dehydrated. Offer water immediately and allow her to soak in lukewarm water. Resume feeding with highly nutritious, easily digestible foods within 24 hours. Recovery from laying typically takes two to three weeks, during which the female should be housed in a stress-free environment with optimal temperatures and easy access to food, water, and basking spots.

Incubation & Hatching

If the eggs are fertile and you intend to hatch them, careful incubation management is essential. Remove the eggs gently from the nesting site, taking care not to rotate them, as the embryo attaches to the upper surface of the egg within hours of laying and rotation can be fatal. Mark the top of each egg lightly with a soft pencil to maintain orientation during transfer to the incubator.

Incubation temperature is the most critical variable and should be maintained between 84 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures within this range tend to produce shorter incubation periods, while lower temperatures extend the timeline. Temperatures outside this range significantly reduce hatching success and can cause developmental abnormalities. Use a reliable, thermostatically controlled incubator designed for reptile eggs rather than improvised setups that may produce inconsistent temperatures.

Humidity during incubation should remain high, typically between 85 and 95 percent. The incubation medium, commonly vermiculite or perlite mixed with water in a one-to-one ratio by weight, maintains moisture levels around the eggs. Check the medium regularly and add water as needed to prevent drying. Eggs that lose too much moisture will dimple and collapse, while overly wet conditions promote mold growth and bacterial contamination.

The incubation period for green iguana eggs ranges from approximately 65 to 115 days, with 75 to 90 days being typical under optimal conditions. As hatching approaches, viable eggs may show slight sweating or condensation on the surface. Hatchlings use an egg tooth to slit the shell and may take up to 48 hours to fully emerge. Do not assist the hatching process unless a hatchling has partially emerged and made no progress for more than 24 hours, in which case veterinary guidance should be sought.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding green iguanas carries significant ethical responsibilities that extend beyond the mechanics of mating and incubation. Before undertaking any breeding project, critically evaluate whether the market and community genuinely need additional green iguanas. Reptile rescues and shelters are routinely overwhelmed with surrendered iguanas from owners who underestimated the commitment required to care for a five-to-seven-foot herbivorous reptile for two decades.

A responsible breeder has confirmed homes for the offspring before eggs are even laid. Green iguana clutches are large, often producing 30 or more hatchlings per clutch. Placing this many animals in qualified homes is a substantial undertaking. Each prospective keeper should demonstrate knowledge of iguana care requirements, have an appropriate enclosure prepared, and understand the long-term financial and spatial commitment involved. Selling or giving hatchlings to unprepared buyers perpetuates the cycle of neglect and abandonment that plagues the species in captivity.

The health of the breeding pair must take absolute priority over the desire to produce offspring. Breeding places enormous physical stress on females, and repeated annual breeding without adequate recovery time shortens their lifespan and degrades their health. A responsible approach includes skipping breeding seasons to allow the female to recover, monitoring her body condition closely, and retiring her from breeding entirely if her health shows signs of cumulative strain.

Consider the genetic implications of your breeding decisions. Avoid pairing closely related animals, as inbreeding increases the likelihood of genetic abnormalities and reduced viability in the offspring. Maintain accurate records of lineage for all breeding animals. If you cannot verify that a pair is unrelated, err on the side of caution and do not breed them. The goal of any breeding program should be to produce healthy, well-adjusted animals, not simply to produce the maximum number of offspring.
