Females typically retain more subdued coloring with brown and tan tones, though they may display orange barring along the sides when gravid later in life. Territorial behavior intensifies markedly during the juvenile stage, particularly in males. Head-bobbing, push-up displays, and lateral body compression are all common postures used to assert dominance or respond to perceived threats. These displays may be directed at the keeper's hand, at their own reflection in the glass, or at a neighboring lizard if housed within visual range. While these behaviors are normal and healthy, they underscore the importance of individual housing for collared lizards. Cohabitation attempts at this age frequently result in aggression, stress, and physical injury.

Females also become more assertive during the juvenile stage, though their displays are generally less frequent and less intense than those of males. A female collared lizard that arm-waves or displays submissive head-bobs is exhibiting normal species-typical communication, not distress. However, persistent hiding, dark stress coloration, or a refusal to bask may indicate environmental problems or social stress from visual contact with other lizards.

Exercise & Activity

Collared lizards are among the most active and athletic lizard species kept in captivity, and the juvenile stage is when this energy is at its peak. A well-housed juvenile collared lizard will spend a significant portion of its waking hours basking, patrolling its territory, climbing, and chasing prey items with impressive speed. Encouraging this natural activity level is essential for physical development, muscle tone, and overall wellbeing.

The enclosure layout directly impacts activity levels. A barren tank with minimal furnishing discourages movement, while a thoughtfully designed habitat with multiple basking levels, climbing surfaces, and visual barriers encourages exploration and natural behavior patterns. Position basking spots at different heights and locations so the lizard must move through the enclosure to access them, rather than sitting in one spot all day.

Supervised out-of-enclosure time can be beneficial for well-socialized juveniles, but it requires careful planning. The room should be secure with no escape routes, no access to other pets, and no small gaps where the lizard could wedge itself. Keep sessions relatively brief — 15 to 30 minutes — and always supervise directly. Collared lizards are fast and can cover surprising distances in seconds when startled. Never leave a juvenile unattended outside its enclosure.

Feeding methods also contribute to exercise. Releasing live prey into the enclosure stimulates natural hunting behavior that involves stalking, chasing, and striking — all activities that engage the lizard physically and mentally. Determining Sex

Accurately determining the sex of a juvenile collared lizard becomes increasingly possible as the animal develops through the adolescent stage, though confident identification is often not reliable until the lizard is approaching six months of age or older. Several visual and physical cues can help keepers make an assessment, but it is important to understand that no single indicator is foolproof in younger animals.

The most reliable external indicator in subadult and older juvenile collared lizards is the presence of enlarged femoral pores on the ventral surface of the thighs. Males develop visibly larger, more prominent pores that may appear waxy or slightly raised compared to the smaller, less conspicuous pores of females. Examining the femoral pores requires gentle handling and good lighting, and comparison between known males and females is helpful for calibrating what to look for.

Coloration is a supporting but not definitive clue. Male collared lizards typically develop brighter, more saturated greens and blues across the body and may show vivid orange, yellow, or turquoise on the throat. Females tend toward more muted earth tones with less extensive bright coloring. However, some females can display surprisingly vivid hues, and stressed or cool males may appear dull, so color alone should not be relied upon for sex determination.

Behavior can offer additional hints. Males tend to head-bob more frequently and aggressively, while females may display arm-waving behavior. Socialization & Handling

The juvenile period is the most formative window for building a strong handler-lizard relationship with a collared lizard. Animals that receive consistent, gentle interaction during this stage typically become the most confident and interactive adults. The goal is to create positive associations with human presence so that the lizard views the keeper as a source of food and safety rather than a threat.

Daily handling sessions of five to ten minutes are ideal for most juvenile collared lizards. Approach the enclosure calmly and let the lizard see your hand before reaching in. Scoop from below rather than grabbing from above, and allow the lizard to walk across your hands rather than restraining it. Many juveniles will initially attempt to sprint or jump, so handle them over a soft surface or while seated on the floor until they become more comfortable.

Hand-feeding is one of the most effective socialization tools available. Offering insects from tongs or even from your fingertips teaches the lizard to associate your hand with food rather than danger. Over time, many collared lizards will eagerly approach the enclosure glass and climb onto their keeper's hand at feeding time. This food-driven interaction builds trust more effectively than handling alone.

Respect the lizard's signals. A juvenile that is darkening in color, gaping defensively, or repeatedly trying to flee is communicating that it has had enough. End the session calmly and try again the next day. Forcing interaction with a stressed animal is counterproductive and can undo weeks of trust-building progress. Patience and consistency are the keys, and nearly all collared lizards will come around given time, even individuals that start out flighty or defensive.

It is also worth noting that collared lizards housed where they can observe household activity — near a living area rather than tucked away in a back room — tend to acclimate to human presence more quickly. Seeing people move around at a safe distance normalizes the experience and reduces the startle response over time.
