Collared lizards should not be bred until they have reached full physical maturity, which typically occurs at approximately 18 to 24 months of age. Breeding animals that are too young or too small diverts energy from their own growth and development and can result in health complications, particularly for females who may struggle with egg production before their bodies are fully prepared. Both the male and female should be in robust health, at a healthy weight, and free of any active health issues before breeding is attempted.

A brumation period is a critical component of the breeding cycle for collared lizards. In the wild, these lizards experience a natural winter dormancy triggered by shorter day lengths and cooler temperatures. In captivity, simulating this cycle by gradually reducing photoperiod to eight to ten hours of daylight and lowering enclosure temperatures to the 55 to 65 degree Fahrenheit range for approximately eight to twelve weeks stimulates the hormonal changes necessary for successful reproduction. Without brumation, breeding attempts often fail or produce infertile eggs.

Before beginning the brumation period, both animals should undergo a thorough health assessment, ideally including a fecal parasite screen. Brumation suppresses the immune system, and an animal carrying a significant parasite burden or dealing with an underlying infection can deteriorate rapidly during the cooling period. Fast the animals for at least ten days before reducing temperatures to ensure the digestive tract is empty, as undigested food can rot internally at cooler temperatures and cause fatal complications.

After brumation, gradually return lighting and temperatures to normal over the course of one to two weeks. Resume feeding with small, easily digestible prey items and increase portion sizes as appetite returns. Both animals should be fully recovered and eating vigorously before any introduction for mating. The female should be allowed several weeks of heavy feeding and calcium supplementation to build reserves before breeding, as egg production places extraordinary demands on her body.

Courtship & Mating

Collared lizard courtship is a dynamic and sometimes intense process that requires attentive supervision from the keeper. The male is introduced into the female's enclosure rather than the reverse, which gives the female the territorial advantage and reduces the likelihood of aggressive behavior from the male. Watch the interaction closely from the moment of introduction, and be prepared to separate the animals immediately if aggression escalates beyond normal courtship behavior.

The male will typically begin with vigorous head-bobbing and lateral body displays, showing off his brightest coloration to the female. He may circle her, approach with a stiff-legged gait, and attempt to position himself alongside her. A receptive female may respond with slow head-bobs or arm-waves and will generally remain still or move slowly, allowing the male to approach. Copulation involves the male grasping the female's neck or shoulder area with his mouth and aligning his body alongside hers. The mating act is brief, usually lasting only a few minutes.

A non-receptive female will communicate her disinterest through dark stress coloration, aggressive gaping, rapid fleeing, or rolling onto her back. If the female displays these defensive behaviors consistently, separate the animals and attempt the introduction again in a few days. Forcing the pairing will not result in successful breeding and can cause serious injury to either animal. Some pairs simply are not compatible, and experienced breeders recognize when it is time to try a different pairing.

Multiple successful matings over several days increase the likelihood of fertile eggs. Some breeders leave the pair together for a few days to a week if the animals are cohabitating peacefully, while others prefer supervised daily introductions followed by separation. Either approach can work, but continuous cohabitation requires vigilant monitoring for signs of stress or aggression, particularly from the male, who may continue to pursue a female that has already been bred and is no longer receptive.

Egg Development & Laying

After successful mating, the female collared lizard will develop eggs over a period of approximately three to six weeks. During this time, her body undergoes visible changes. The abdomen swells as the eggs grow, and she may develop vivid orange or reddish barring along her flanks, a hormonal color change that is characteristic of gravid females in this species. Appetite typically increases dramatically during the early weeks of egg development as her body demands additional nutrients and calcium for shell formation.

Calcium supplementation becomes critically important during the gravid period. Dust every feeding with calcium powder and ensure the female has access to a small dish of plain calcium carbonate powder that she can lick freely. Calcium deficiency during egg development can result in thin-shelled or shell-less eggs, egg binding, and potentially fatal metabolic collapse. The UVB lighting should be in peak condition, as the female's vitamin D3 needs are elevated during this period.

As the eggs near full development, the female will begin searching for a suitable laying site. Provide a nesting area within the enclosure consisting of a container filled with a moist, diggable substrate such as a mixture of vermiculite and sand or coconut fiber. The nesting container should be deep enough for the female to excavate a burrow of at least four to six inches. If an adequate laying site is not available, the female may retain the eggs, leading to the life-threatening condition known as egg binding.

Collared lizards typically lay clutches of four to eight eggs, though clutch size can vary based on the size and age of the female. The laying process may take several hours, and the female should not be disturbed during this time. After laying, she will often cover the eggs with substrate and may appear exhausted and thin. Remove the eggs carefully for incubation once she has finished and moved away from the nest.

Incubation

Collared lizard eggs should be incubated in a dedicated incubator rather than left in the enclosure, where temperature and humidity fluctuations make successful hatching unpredictable. Carefully uncover the eggs and transfer them to an incubation container, maintaining their original orientation. Mark the top of each egg with a soft pencil or non-toxic marker before moving them, as rotating reptile eggs after the first 24 hours can detach the developing embryo from its blood supply and kill it.

The incubation medium should be moist vermiculite, perlite, or a commercial reptile egg incubation substrate. A commonly used ratio is one part vermiculite to one part water by weight, which provides adequate humidity without making the substrate so wet that the eggs mold. Nestle the eggs about halfway into the medium so they are partially exposed to air circulation. Cover the container with a lid that has a few small ventilation holes to allow gas exchange while maintaining humidity.

Incubation temperature influences both the development rate and, in some reptile species, the sex of the offspring. For collared lizards, an incubation temperature of approximately 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit produces good hatching rates with an incubation period of roughly 50 to 80 days. Temperatures at the warmer end of this range tend to produce faster development, while cooler temperatures extend the incubation period. Avoid temperature fluctuations greater than a few degrees, as instability increases the risk of developmental abnormalities and embryo death.

Check the eggs regularly for signs of viability throughout the incubation period. Healthy developing eggs will gradually swell slightly and may develop visible veining when candled with a small flashlight after the first two weeks. Infertile eggs typically yellow, collapse, or develop mold within the first week or two and should be removed promptly to prevent contamination of viable eggs. As hatching approaches, the eggs may dimple or sweat, which indicates that the hatchling is preparing to emerge.

Postpartum Care

The female collared lizard requires attentive care in the days and weeks following egg laying. She will have depleted significant body reserves during egg development and laying, and rapid nutritional recovery is essential for her health. Offer food daily for the first two weeks postpartum, with generous calcium supplementation at every feeding. Soft-bodied, nutrient-dense prey such as hornworms and silkworms are ideal recovery foods because they are easy to catch and digest while providing excellent hydration and nutritional value.

Monitor the female's body condition closely during the recovery period. She should begin regaining weight and body condition within the first week of resumed feeding. If she refuses food for more than two days after laying, appears lethargic, or shows abdominal swelling that does not resolve after laying, a veterinary evaluation is warranted to rule out retained eggs or postpartum infection. Retained eggs that are not addressed can lead to peritonitis and death.

The female should be housed alone during her recovery period. Reintroducing a male too soon can result in repeated mating before she has recovered, leading to a second clutch that her body may not be prepared to support. Some collared lizard females are capable of producing two or even three clutches per season from a single mating or from stored sperm, so even without a male present, a second nesting effort may occur. Keep the nesting area available for several weeks after the first clutch in case she produces additional eggs.

Once the female has fully recovered her weight and body condition, she can return to her normal adult care routine. If the keeper plans to breed her again the following season, she should be given a full recovery period and a proper brumation cycle before any further breeding attempts. Breeding a female in consecutive seasons without adequate recovery time is a common cause of premature decline and should be avoided by responsible keepers.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding collared lizards carries responsibilities that extend well beyond the mechanics of mating and incubation. Before committing to a breeding project, keepers should have a realistic plan for the resulting hatchlings. A single clutch can produce four to eight babies, each of which will need its own enclosure, daily feeding, supplementation, and ongoing care. Without secured homes or a reliable network of experienced reptile keepers interested in the offspring, a successful hatch can quickly become an overwhelming care burden.

Genetic responsibility is an important consideration that is sometimes overlooked in the enthusiasm of breeding. Avoid breeding animals that are closely related, as inbreeding increases the risk of genetic defects, reduced immune function, and failure to thrive in offspring. Maintaining records of lineage and sourcing breeding stock from unrelated lines strengthens the captive population and produces healthier, more vigorous offspring. If the genetic background of a potential breeding animal is unknown, this uncertainty should factor into the decision.

The welfare of the breeding female must always be a primary consideration. Egg production is physically demanding, and repeated breeding without adequate recovery periods leads to calcium depletion, organ stress, and shortened lifespan. Responsible breeders limit females to one or at most two breeding seasons per year, ensure full recovery between clutches, and retire females from breeding programs once they show signs of age-related decline or reproductive difficulty.

Finally, consider the broader impact of your breeding decisions on the collared lizard hobby and the species as a whole. Produce animals that represent healthy, well-cared-for examples of the species. Screen potential buyers or adopters to ensure they have the knowledge and resources to provide appropriate care. Avoid contributing to market oversaturation that drives down the perceived value of the animals and leads to impulse purchases by unprepared keepers. Quality breeding that prioritizes animal welfare over quantity benefits the animals, the keepers, and the hobby as a whole.
