Assessing a female's readiness for breeding involves more than just age. Females that are underweight, recovering from illness, or have a history of laying difficulties should not be bred until they have fully recovered and stabilized.

A healthy breeding male should be alert, feeding well, displaying vibrant coloration, and showing active interest in his surroundings. Handle eggs gently and avoid rotating them from the orientation in which they were found, as embryo development can be disrupted by position changes in the early stages. Each egg should be inspected briefly for obvious defects such as deep dents, mold, or discoloration, and any clearly non-viable eggs can be discarded.

The eggs should be partially buried in the medium with the top third exposed, and spaced far enough apart that they do not touch each other. A commonly used temperature range is seventy-two to seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit, with temperatures at the lower end producing longer incubation periods and those at the higher end shortening the timeline. Consistent temperature is more important than hitting an exact number, and significant fluctuations should be avoided. During the months of incubation, eggs should be checked periodically for signs of mold, collapse, or infertility.
