Unlike many reptile species that may rest quietly after hatching, baby basilisks are often active within minutes and may attempt to run or climb almost immediately. This burst of energy is a survival instinct, as wild hatchlings must quickly find cover from predators. In captivity, this means your enclosure should be fully set up and secure before the eggs hatch, with no gaps or openings that a tiny lizard could squeeze through.

During the first day, resist the urge to handle or disturb the hatchling. Allow it to orient itself within the enclosure, find hiding spots, and begin exploring at its own pace. The stress of hatching is significant, and additional handling compounds that stress considerably. Provide fresh, clean water in a shallow dish that the hatchling can easily access without risk of drowning, and ensure the temperature gradient in the enclosure is properly established.

It is completely normal for a hatchling basilisk to refuse food during the first 24 hours. The lizard is still absorbing residual yolk nutrients from the egg, which provides enough energy to sustain it through this initial adjustment period. Do not attempt to force-feed or aggressively offer food during this window. Simply ensure that small, appropriately sized feeder insects are available so the hatchling can eat when it is ready.

Observe the hatchling from a distance during this time. Look for signs that it is breathing normally, moving without difficulty, and responding to stimuli. A healthy hatchling will have bright, clear eyes, smooth skin, and coordinated movements. If you notice any retained egg membrane clinging to the body, allow it to come off naturally rather than pulling at it, as the delicate skin underneath can tear easily.

Feeding & Nutrition

Baby basilisks are enthusiastic feeders once they settle in, typically beginning to eat within 24 to 48 hours after hatching. At this stage, their diet should consist primarily of small, soft-bodied insects such as pinhead crickets, fruit flies, and micro mealworms. The size of the prey item is critical — a good rule of thumb is that no feeder insect should be wider than the space between the hatchling's eyes. Offering prey that is too large can lead to choking or impaction, both of which are serious concerns in very young reptiles.

Feeding should occur daily for hatchlings, and you can offer food twice per day if the lizard shows strong appetite. Developmental Milestones

Basilisk hatchlings grow rapidly during their first weeks of life. At hatching, most basilisks measure roughly five to seven inches in total length, with the tail making up a significant portion of that measurement. Within the first month, expect noticeable growth in both body length and head size. The crest structures that characterize adult basilisks are not yet visible in hatchlings, but you may begin to see subtle ridging along the head and back by the end of the first month.

Shedding is one of the most important developmental indicators in young basilisks. Hatchlings will shed their skin for the first time within the first one to two weeks after hatching, and subsequent sheds may occur every two to three weeks during this rapid growth phase. A healthy shed should come off in large, mostly intact pieces. Coordination improves dramatically during the newborn phase. While freshly hatched basilisks can run and climb, their movements become more precise and controlled over the first several weeks. You will notice improved hunting accuracy when catching feeder insects and more confident navigation of branches and perches within the enclosure.

Enclosure & Environment

The enclosure for a hatchling basilisk should prioritize security and proper environmental gradients over size. A well-ventilated terrarium of approximately ten to twenty gallons is suitable for the first few months. While adult basilisks need significantly larger enclosures, starting a tiny hatchling in a very large space can make it difficult for the animal to find food and can increase stress levels. Ensure the enclosure has a secure, tight-fitting lid, as even very young basilisks are surprisingly adept at finding and exploiting escape routes.

Temperature management is critical for hatchling health. Establish a basking spot that reaches 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit on the warm end, with the cool side of the enclosure sitting in the mid-70s. A shallow water dish large enough for the hatchling to soak in also contributes to ambient humidity. Basilisks are semi-aquatic lizards, and even hatchlings may wade or soak in their water dish regularly.

Provide UVB lighting on a 12-hour cycle to support vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium metabolism. A linear UVB bulb appropriate for tropical species is ideal. Position the bulb so the hatchling can bask within the effective UVB range, typically six to twelve inches from the light source depending on the bulb strength. Replace UVB bulbs according to manufacturer recommendations, as their output diminishes over time even when they still appear to be working.

Furnish the enclosure with multiple thin branches, live or artificial plants, and at least two hiding spots — one on the warm side and one on the cool side. Hatchling basilisks feel most secure when they have vertical climbing opportunities and dense foliage to hide within. This mimics their natural habitat along tropical waterways where dense vegetation provides cover from predators.

Early Socialization

Handling a hatchling basilisk requires patience and a gentle approach. For the first week after hatching, limit interaction to observation only, allowing the lizard to acclimate to its new environment without added stress. After this initial settling period, you can begin very brief handling sessions lasting no more than a few minutes each. The goal during this phase is not to tame the basilisk completely but rather to begin building a tolerance for human contact.

Baby basilisks are naturally skittish and their primary defense response is to flee at high speed. When approaching the enclosure, move slowly and avoid reaching in from directly above, as this mimics the approach of an aerial predator. Instead, approach from the side and gently scoop the hatchling from below. If the lizard bolts, do not chase it around the enclosure — this only reinforces its fear response. Wait a few minutes and try again calmly.

Consistency is more valuable than duration when it comes to socializing young basilisks. Short, positive handling sessions every day or every other day will yield better results than infrequent, prolonged sessions that leave the animal exhausted and stressed. Some keepers find that allowing the hatchling to simply sit on a warm hand inside the enclosure, without lifting it out, is an effective first step in building trust.

Keep in mind that basilisks, even well-socialized ones, tend to remain more flighty than some other popular pet lizard species. Temperament varies between individuals, and some hatchlings will calm down more readily than others. Manage your expectations accordingly and never force handling on a visibly stressed animal. Signs of stress include gaping, rapid breathing, dark coloration, and frantic attempts to escape.

Health Screening & Vet Visits

Schedule a veterinary wellness check within the first two weeks of acquiring or hatching a basilisk. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can assess the hatchling's overall condition, check for congenital abnormalities, and examine a fecal sample for internal parasites. Parasites are common in reptiles, including captive-bred individuals, and early detection allows for treatment before the parasite burden affects growth and development.

During the initial health screening, the veterinarian will evaluate body condition, hydration status, and limb and spinal alignment. Metabolic bone disease can begin to develop very early in life if husbandry conditions are inadequate, so baseline observations at this age are valuable for comparison at future visits. Discuss your enclosure setup, feeding regimen, and supplementation schedule with the vet, as many health issues in young reptiles stem from husbandry errors rather than infectious disease.

Between veterinary visits, monitor your hatchling closely for any signs of illness. Healthy hatchlings are alert, active during appropriate hours, and eat regularly. Warning signs include lethargy, refusal to eat for more than two to three consecutive days, sunken eyes, wrinkled skin indicating dehydration, swollen joints or limbs, discharge from the eyes or nostrils, and abnormal feces. Any of these symptoms warrant prompt veterinary attention, as young reptiles can decline rapidly when ill.

Maintain a simple health log for your hatchling that tracks feeding dates and quantities, shedding dates, weight measurements taken weekly, and any behavioral observations. This record becomes invaluable if you do need to visit the veterinarian, as it provides a clear picture of the animal's recent history and helps identify when changes first began.

When to Worry

While most basilisk hatchlings thrive with proper care, there are several situations that require immediate attention. Failure to eat for more than 48 to 72 hours after the initial settling period is cause for concern. While a brief hunger strike during the first day is normal, a hatchling that continues to refuse food beyond this window may be dealing with stress, illness, incorrect environmental conditions, or a combination of factors. Review your husbandry parameters first, then consult a veterinarian if the issue persists.

Stuck shed is a common but potentially serious issue in young basilisks. Retained skin around the toes can act as a tourniquet, cutting off blood flow and eventually leading to the loss of digits. Check your hatchling carefully after each shed cycle, paying particular attention to the toes, tail tip, and the area around the eyes. If stuck shed is present, increase humidity and offer a warm, shallow soak. Do not attempt to peel or pull retained skin off forcefully, as this can damage the new skin beneath.

Respiratory infections are another risk, particularly if the enclosure is too cold or too damp without adequate ventilation. Symptoms include open-mouth breathing, wheezing or clicking sounds, mucus around the nostrils or mouth, and lethargy. Respiratory infections in reptiles do not resolve on their own and require veterinary treatment, typically with antibiotics. Delaying treatment allows the infection to worsen and can be fatal in small hatchlings.

Watch for signs of metabolic bone disease, which can appear within just a few weeks if calcium and UVB provisions are inadequate. Early signs include a soft or rubbery jaw, tremors or twitching in the limbs, difficulty walking or climbing, and a reluctance to move. Advanced cases result in visible bone deformities and fractures. This condition is largely preventable with proper supplementation and lighting, which is why getting these elements right from the start is so important.
