Regular veterinary checkups remain important even when your basilisk appears perfectly healthy. An annual wellness exam with a reptile-experienced veterinarian should include a physical examination, a fecal parasite screening, and a general assessment of body condition. Many reptile health issues develop slowly and are not obvious to even attentive keepers until they have progressed significantly. Routine veterinary visits provide the opportunity to catch problems early when they are most treatable.

Daily observation is your most powerful health maintenance tool. Learn your basilisk's normal behavior patterns — when it basks, when it is most active, how much it typically eats, and how it moves through its enclosure. Changes in any of these patterns can be the first indication of a developing health issue. Keep a basic log of feeding, shedding, and any unusual observations. Over time, this record reveals patterns that help you differentiate between normal individual variation and genuine cause for concern.

Maintain strict enclosure hygiene throughout the adult years. Spot-clean waste daily, replace water in dishes and pools at least daily, and perform a thorough substrate change on a regular schedule appropriate for your substrate type. Bacterial and fungal infections are often linked to unsanitary conditions, and a clean enclosure is one of the simplest and most effective preventive health measures available.

Nutrition at Maturity

Adult basilisk nutrition should reflect the slower metabolic rate and reduced growth demands of a fully mature animal. Feeding frequency decreases from the daily or every-other-day schedule of juveniles to approximately three to four times per week for most adults. The exact frequency depends on body condition — an animal that is maintaining a healthy weight can stay on a consistent schedule, while one that is becoming overweight should be fed less frequently or in smaller portions.

The diet of an adult basilisk should be a balanced mix of appropriately sized insects and plant matter. Staple feeder insects include adult crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, and occasional superworms. Treats like waxworms, hornworms, and silkworms can be offered sparingly to add variety. The plant component of the diet becomes increasingly important in adulthood, and a mature basilisk should be regularly consuming leafy greens, vegetables, and small amounts of fruit. Collard greens, mustard greens, butternut squash, and dandelion greens are all excellent choices.

An adult basilisk requires a spacious enclosure that accommodates its full size, activity level, and semi-aquatic lifestyle. The minimum recommended enclosure for a single adult is approximately four feet long, two feet deep, and three feet tall, though larger is always better. Height is particularly important, as basilisks are strong climbers that spend a significant amount of time perched on elevated branches. The enclosure must be securely screened or covered, as even adult basilisks can be escape artists when motivated.

The water feature in an adult enclosure should be substantial enough for the basilisk to fully submerge and soak. Many keepers incorporate a water area that occupies roughly one-quarter to one-third of the enclosure floor space. This water should be kept clean through frequent changes or a filtration system, as basilisks often defecate in water. The water area also contributes significantly to maintaining appropriate humidity levels within the enclosure. A basking platform adjacent to the water allows the basilisk to thermoregulate after soaking.

Environmental enrichment goes beyond simply providing branches and plants. Adult basilisks benefit from periodic changes to their enclosure layout — rearranging branches, adding new climbing structures, or changing the position of visual barriers. This environmental novelty encourages exploration and mimics the dynamic natural habitats that basilisks occupy in the wild. Some keepers rotate through different sets of artificial plants and decorations on a monthly basis to keep the environment stimulating.

Maintain the tropical temperature and humidity parameters that basilisks require throughout their lives. A basking spot of 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, an ambient warm side in the mid-80s, a cool side in the mid-70s, and humidity between 60 and 80 percent remains the target range for adults. Monitor these conditions with quality digital instruments and adjust seasonally if your home's ambient temperature and humidity fluctuate with the weather.

Preventive Health Care

Preventive health care for adult basilisks centers on maintaining excellent husbandry, regular veterinary monitoring, and proactive management of the most common health risks. Metabolic bone disease remains a concern even in adults if supplementation or UVB exposure lapses. Respiratory infections can develop if temperatures drop too low or if the enclosure is overly damp without adequate airflow. Parasitic infections, both internal and external, can occur at any age and should be monitored through periodic fecal testing.

Skin health is an important area of focus for adult basilisks. The skin should appear smooth, vibrant in color, and free of lesions, discoloration, or abnormal texture. Abrasions on the rostrum, or snout, are common in basilisks that repeatedly rub against enclosure walls or screen lids. Persistent rostral abrasions indicate that the enclosure is too small, the animal is stressed, or it can see its reflection and is attempting to interact with or flee from the perceived intruder. Addressing the root cause is essential, as chronic rostral damage can lead to infection and permanent scarring.

Shedding in adult basilisks occurs less frequently than in juveniles, typically every four to eight weeks depending on growth and condition. Each shed should come off cleanly and completely. Chronic incomplete sheds in an adult, particularly stuck shed around toes and the tail tip, indicate a humidity problem that needs correction. Between sheds, the skin should appear healthy and intact without dry patches, scale damage, or signs of fungal infection such as discolored spots or powdery deposits.

Mouth health deserves regular attention. Stomatitis, or mouth rot, is a bacterial infection of the oral tissues that can develop when bacteria enter through small mouth injuries. Symptoms include redness, swelling, or cheesy-white deposits along the gum line, excessive saliva production, and reluctance to eat. Stomatitis requires veterinary treatment with antibiotics and topical antiseptics, and if left untreated, it can spread to the jaw bone and become life-threatening. Regular visual inspection of the mouth during routine handling helps catch this condition early.

Behavioral Maturity

Adult basilisks display a settled behavioral repertoire that reflects their established temperament. By this stage, the animal's tolerance for handling and its general disposition toward its keeper are largely established. While continued gentle interaction can maintain and sometimes slightly improve the handling relationship, dramatic personality changes are unlikely in a mature animal. Accept your basilisk's temperament as it is and work within its comfort level rather than pushing for a level of docility that the species does not naturally offer.

Territorial behavior is most pronounced in adult males, which may display aggressively toward perceived rivals. This includes puffing up the body, displaying the crest and dewlap, head-bobbing vigorously, and even charging toward the perceived threat. A male basilisk that can see another male — including its own reflection in enclosure glass — may spend considerable energy on these displays, leading to chronic stress and even self-injury from charging at the glass. Use background treatments on enclosure walls to prevent reflections and keep males in separate enclosures.

Adult females may display egg-laying behavior even in the absence of a male. This is a normal reproductive response, but it requires the keeper to provide an appropriate nesting area with a deep, moist substrate where the female can dig and deposit her infertile eggs. A female that is unable to find an acceptable nesting site may retain her eggs, leading to a dangerous condition called egg binding that requires emergency veterinary intervention. Providing a laying box proactively prevents this life-threatening complication.

Activity patterns in healthy adult basilisks follow a predictable daily rhythm. The animal typically basks in the morning to raise its body temperature, becomes active and exploratory through the middle of the day, may soak or swim during warm afternoon hours, and gradually settles into a sleeping position as evening approaches and temperatures drop. Significant deviations from this pattern — such as nocturnal restlessness, prolonged hiding during active hours, or complete cessation of basking — often signal a health or environmental issue.

Shedding & Skin Care

Shedding in adult basilisks is a routine process that, under proper conditions, requires minimal intervention from the keeper. A healthy adult sheds its skin in large, connected pieces over the course of one to three days. The process begins with a dulling of the skin color and a milky, opaque appearance to the eyes, often called being "in blue." During this pre-shed period, the basilisk may be less active, refuse food, and prefer to soak in water more frequently. These behavioral changes are completely normal and typically resolve once the shed is complete.

Maintaining proper humidity is the single most important factor in supporting clean, complete sheds. During the pre-shed and active shedding phases, consider increasing misting frequency slightly and ensuring the water feature is easily accessible. Some keepers add a dedicated humid hide — a partially enclosed space lined with damp sphagnum moss — that gives the basilisk a microclimate of very high humidity to retreat to when shedding. This is especially useful in enclosures where maintaining consistently high ambient humidity is challenging.

After each shed, inspect the basilisk carefully for any retained skin. Pay particular attention to the toes, where constricting bands of retained shed can cut off circulation and cause tissue death. The tail tip, around the eyes, and along the edges of the crests are other areas where shed commonly sticks. If you find retained skin, increase humidity and offer warm soaks before attempting any manual removal. Never pull or peel stuck shed forcefully, as this can tear the new skin beneath and create wounds susceptible to infection.

The overall condition of the shed skin itself provides useful health information. A healthy shed should be translucent, flexible, and come off in large pieces. Sheds that are extremely fragmented, excessively thick, or discolored may indicate nutritional deficiencies, chronic dehydration, or skin disease. If your basilisk's shed quality declines over time, review humidity levels, hydration access, and nutritional supplementation, and consult a veterinarian if the problem persists despite husbandry corrections.
