This growth is not linear but occurs in surges punctuated by frequent shedding cycles, and keepers should expect to observe visible increases in body size every few weeks when conditions are properly maintained.
Shedding frequency increases during the juvenile phase compared to the neonatal period, with healthy juveniles shedding every ten to twenty days depending on growth rate and environmental humidity. Each shed should come off cleanly in large sections, and the skin beneath should appear bright and well-colored. Persistent retained shed on the digits, tail tip, or around the developing cranial crest is a signal that ambient humidity is too low or that the animal lacks access to a humid microclimate for pre-shed preparation. A dedicated humid hide filled with damp sphagnum moss should remain available at all times, and supplemental misting during active shed cycles can help prevent complications.
Sexual dimorphism becomes increasingly apparent during the latter half of the juvenile period, though definitive sex determination through external observation alone remains unreliable until the animal approaches twelve to fifteen months of age. Males begin to develop broader heads, more pronounced nuchal and vertebral crests, and the earliest hints of the deep reddish-orange ventral coloration that becomes dramatic in mature specimens. Females tend toward more slender head proportions, shorter crests, and a uniformly lighter ventral surface. These differences emerge gradually and are most visible when juveniles of both sexes are housed in visual proximity, though cohabitation at this age is generally inadvisable due to dominance-related stress.
Weekly weight and length measurements remain essential throughout the juvenile phase and provide the most objective assessment of whether the animal is tracking within normal developmental parameters. A healthy juvenile should show consistent upward trends in both metrics, with brief plateaus around shed cycles being normal. Any sustained stalling of growth lasting more than two to three weeks warrants a thorough husbandry audit, beginning with temperature verification, followed by a dietary review and a veterinary fecal examination to screen for internal parasites. Parasitic infections acquired from feeder insects or contaminated substrate are among the most common causes of growth stalling in juvenile agamids, and early detection allows for treatment before permanent developmental compromise occurs.
