During the first day, the hatchling may remain relatively still as it absorbs the last of its yolk sac, which provides critical nutrients during the transition to independent feeding. Avoid handling the hatchling during this period, as the stress of being touched can suppress feeding behavior and compromise the animal's fragile immune response. Ensure the hatchling enclosure is set up and fully stabilized before the eggs hatch. The warm end of the enclosure should sit between 85 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while the cool end should range from 75 to 80 degrees. A basking spot reaching 90 to 92 degrees gives hatchlings the opportunity to raise their body temperature quickly after feeding.

UVB lighting is non-negotiable for hatchling anoles. Without adequate UVB exposure, hatchlings cannot synthesize vitamin D3, which in turn prevents proper calcium absorption. A low-output UVB bulb appropriate for tropical species should run on a 12-hour light cycle to mimic the natural photoperiod of the brown anole's native range. Rather than bonding with a keeper or learning to interact with other animals, early socialization for hatchling anoles focuses on gradual habituation to the captive environment and the presence of the keeper. The goal is to reduce the stress response over time so that routine maintenance activities do not cause excessive panic.

During the first two weeks, handling should be avoided entirely. The hatchling needs time to establish feeding routines and acclimate to the sights, sounds, and vibrations of its enclosure location. Simply spending time near the enclosure without interacting directly helps the hatchling learn that the keeper's presence is not a threat. Moving slowly and deliberately during feeding and misting sessions reinforces this message.

After the initial acclimation period, brief and gentle handling sessions can be introduced if the keeper wishes to work toward a more handleable animal. Sessions should last no more than a minute or two and should never involve chasing the hatchling around the enclosure. Instead, place a hand flat in the enclosure and allow the lizard to walk onto it voluntarily. Health Screening & Vet Visits

Finding a reptile-experienced veterinarian before your anoles hatch is an important preparatory step that many keepers overlook. Not all veterinary clinics treat reptiles, and exotic animal specialists can be difficult to locate on short notice. Having a vet relationship established in advance means you can seek advice quickly if a hatchling fails to thrive or shows signs of illness.

Routine health assessments for hatchlings can largely be done visually at home. A healthy hatchling should be alert, responsive, and actively hunting. The eyes should be bright and fully open, the body should appear filled out rather than sunken, and the limbs should move smoothly without trembling or dragging. Daily observation during feeding is the best opportunity to evaluate these indicators without disturbing the animal.

Watch for signs of metabolic bone disease, which is the most common serious health issue in young insectivorous reptiles. Early symptoms include lethargy, reluctance to climb, a softening or bowing of the jaw, and twitching or trembling of the limbs. If caught early, MBD can often be reversed with corrections to diet, supplementation, and UVB exposure, but advanced cases can be fatal or result in permanent deformities.

Parasitic infections are another concern, particularly if the hatchling was produced from wild-caught parents or if feeder insects are sourced from unreliable suppliers. A fecal examination performed by a reptile veterinarian can identify common parasites. Symptoms to watch for include weight loss despite adequate feeding, runny or discolored stools, and a general failure to grow at the expected rate. Prompt treatment with veterinarian-prescribed antiparasitic medication is usually effective.

When to Worry

Hatchling brown anoles are fragile, and even small problems can escalate quickly due to the animal's tiny size and limited energy reserves. Knowing the warning signs of trouble allows keepers to intervene early, which dramatically improves outcomes. A hatchling that refuses to eat for more than two consecutive days after the initial 24-hour acclimation period should be cause for concern, as these small lizards cannot afford prolonged fasting.

Lethargy is another critical warning sign. While hatchling anoles do rest, a healthy individual should be alert and responsive when disturbed and should show active interest in prey items. A hatchling that remains motionless on the enclosure floor, fails to grip branches, or does not react when prey is introduced nearby may be suffering from a temperature problem, dehydration, or illness.

Retained shed is a common but potentially serious issue. Shed skin that remains stuck around the toes can restrict blood flow and lead to the loss of digits. Check hatchlings carefully after each shed cycle and address any retained pieces by gently misting the animal and providing rough-textured surfaces for the lizard to rub against. Never attempt to pull retained shed off forcibly, as this can damage the delicate skin underneath.

Sudden weight loss, sunken eyes, and a visibly thin tail base are signs of dehydration or a wasting condition that requires immediate attention. Increase misting frequency, verify that humidity levels are within the correct range, and consider offering prey items that have been lightly misted to increase water intake. If the hatchling does not improve within 24 to 48 hours, a veterinary consultation is strongly recommended.
