These brief daily checks take only a few minutes and prevent small issues from becoming large problems.

Deep cleaning should occur on a monthly basis or as needed based on the bioload of the enclosure. This involves removing the animal to a secure temporary container, removing all furnishings, replacing or washing the substrate, scrubbing hard surfaces with a reptile-safe disinfectant, and rinsing everything thoroughly before reassembling. Live plants can be gently rinsed and inspected for pests during these sessions.

Substrate choice affects both maintenance workload and enclosure health. Moisture-retaining substrates like coconut fiber or sphagnum moss blends help maintain humidity but must be monitored for mold and bacterial growth. Spot cleaning is essential with these substrates, as droppings that are left to decompose in warm, humid conditions create a breeding ground for pathogens. Some keepers prefer paper towels for ease of cleaning, though they offer less humidity support and a less natural appearance.

Enclosure hardware requires periodic attention as well.
