Unlike many companion rabbit breeds where selection criteria focus primarily on conformation and temperament, German Angora breeding places equal or greater emphasis on wool characteristics, including density, texture, staple length, yield weight, and freedom from guard hair that reduces fiber quality. A breeding pair should complement each other's strengths and compensate for each other's weaknesses, with the goal of producing offspring that advance the fiber program's objectives.
Evaluate prospective breeding does and bucks on the basis of their lifetime wool production records. A German Angora with consistent harvests of four ounces or more per 90-day cycle, producing fiber with a soft handle, good crimp structure, and uniform staple length, is a more valuable genetic contributor than one with intermittent peaks of high production interspersed with poor harvests. Consistency indicates robust underlying health, stable hormonal function, and reliable follicular activity, all of which are heritable to varying degrees.
Health screening is a non-negotiable component of breeding stock selection. Both the doe and buck should be current on veterinary examinations, free of dental malocclusion, clear of Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection through serological testing if available, and screened for signs of syphilis, also known as vent disease, which presents as crusty lesions around the genitalia, nose, and lips. A rabbit with active or untreated syphilis should never be bred, as the spirochete is transmitted venereally and from doe to kit. Body condition should be lean and well-muscled, with no signs of obesity, skeletal deformity, or chronic illness.
Temperament is the third pillar of breeding stock selection and is especially important in a breed that requires intensive, lifelong handling. German Angoras that are calm, tolerant of grooming and shearing, and cooperative during veterinary examinations pass behavioral tendencies to their offspring through both genetics and early maternal modeling. Does that are aggressive toward their kits, excessively nervous, or consistently difficult to handle should be retired from the breeding program regardless of their fiber quality, as the welfare costs of perpetuating poor temperament outweigh the fiber gains.
