As the spider grows larger, the intervals between molts will gradually lengthen. Growth rates in Chilean Rose Tarantulas are notoriously slow compared to many other popular tarantula species. A keeper who is accustomed to faster-growing species may find the pace frustrating, but patience is essential. Attempting to accelerate growth through overfeeding or elevated temperatures can stress the spider and lead to health complications. The slow, steady growth pattern of this species is one of the reasons it is so long-lived, and respecting its natural pace produces the healthiest adults.
Sex determination becomes increasingly possible as the juvenile grows and produces larger exuviae after each molt. Examining the shed exoskeleton under magnification allows experienced keepers to identify the presence or absence of spermathecae, which indicates a female. Males typically grow faster and reach maturity sooner than females, but definitive identification usually requires examining exuviae from later juvenile molts when the relevant structures are large enough to see clearly.
