The female should be a well-established adult that has been in the keeper's care long enough to have a documented history of regular molts, consistent feeding, and good overall health. A female with a plump, well-rounded abdomen and a recent molt within the past three to six months is in ideal condition for breeding. Attempting to breed a female that is in pre-molt, underweight, or showing signs of illness significantly reduces the chances of success and increases the risk of complications.

The male must have completed his ultimate molt, which is identifiable by the presence of tibial hooks on the front legs and the development of palpal emboli, the modified pedipalps used to transfer sperm to the female. Mature males become noticeably more active and restless after this final molt, pacing their enclosures and drumming their legs in search of a mate. This urgency is driven by the male's limited post-maturity lifespan, which typically spans only one to two years.

Before introducing the pair, the male should be well-fed and hydrated. A male that is weak or dehydrated is less likely to perform the courtship ritual successfully and more likely to be killed by the female before mating can occur. Feed the male generously in the weeks leading up to the introduction, and ensure that he has constant access to fresh water. Similarly, the female should be fed heavily in the days before the introduction to reduce the likelihood that she will view the male as prey rather than a potential mate.

Timing the introduction is an important consideration. Many breeders report higher success rates when breeding attempts coincide with seasonal changes, particularly the transition from cooler to warmer conditions that mimics the natural breeding season in the Chilean Rose Tarantula's native habitat. A brief cooling period of several weeks, with temperatures dropped to the low sixties, followed by a gradual return to normal temperatures, can stimulate breeding behavior in both sexes.

Courtship & Mating

The courtship and mating process in Chilean Rose Tarantulas is a carefully choreographed interaction that carries significant risk, particularly for the male. When the male is introduced to the female's enclosure, he will typically begin drumming his front legs and pedipalps on the substrate, producing vibrations that signal his presence and intentions to the female. A receptive female will respond by drumming back or by emerging from her hide and raising her front legs, exposing her fangs in a posture that appears threatening but is actually part of the mating ritual.

The male approaches the female cautiously, using his tibial hooks to engage and lock her fangs during the mating embrace. This hooking mechanism is critical, as it prevents the female from biting the male during the actual transfer of sperm. With the female's fangs safely engaged, the male reaches beneath her with his palpal emboli and inserts them into her genital opening, depositing a sperm packet. The entire mating process may last only a few seconds to a few minutes, though the approach and courtship leading up to it can take considerably longer.

The most dangerous moment for the male comes immediately after mating. Once sperm transfer is complete, the male must disengage from the female and retreat quickly before she strikes. Mature males are typically faster than females and will bolt away at high speed after releasing the tibial hook lock. The keeper should be prepared to intervene if the female lunges at the male after disengagement. A long piece of cardboard or a soft paintbrush can be used to separate the pair if the female becomes aggressive.

Multiple mating sessions over several days can increase the likelihood of fertilization, but each introduction carries the risk of the female killing the male. Many breeders allow one or two successful matings and then separate the pair permanently. If the female is clearly unreceptive, showing aggressive behavior from the outset without reciprocal drumming, the introduction should be aborted immediately and reattempted at a later date.

Egg Sac Development

After a successful mating, the female Chilean Rose Tarantula may take anywhere from several weeks to several months before producing an egg sac. During this period, the female's appetite typically increases dramatically as she builds the nutritional reserves needed to produce hundreds of eggs. Feed the female generously and frequently during this time, offering a variety of nutritious prey items to support egg development.

The female constructs the egg sac from a thick mat of silk that she lays on the substrate, usually within or near her burrow. She deposits the eggs onto this silk mat and then carefully wraps them in additional layers of silk, forming a round, densely woven package that she will guard fiercely for the duration of incubation. The egg sac is typically white or cream-colored when first produced and may darken slightly over time.

Once the egg sac is produced, the female becomes highly protective and may refuse food entirely while guarding it. She will carry the egg sac with her chelicerae, rotating it periodically to ensure even temperature and humidity exposure across all the developing eggs. This rotation behavior is essential for proper development, and a female that stops rotating the sac may be signaling that the eggs are infertile or that environmental conditions are not suitable.

The incubation period for Chilean Rose Tarantula egg sacs is typically six to ten weeks, though this can vary depending on temperature and other environmental factors. During this period, the keeper should maintain stable conditions in the enclosure and minimize disturbance. Resist the urge to check on the egg sac frequently, as handling or excessive vibration can cause the female to abandon or destroy it. Patience is essential during this waiting period, and the best thing a keeper can do is maintain consistent husbandry and let nature take its course.

Incubation & Hatching

As the egg sac matures, the developing embryos pass through several stages before emerging as fully formed spiderlings. Inside the sac, the eggs first develop into postembryo stage organisms that resemble tiny, pale, legless grubs. These gradually develop into first-instar nymphs with recognizable leg structures, and then into second-instar nymphs that look like miniature versions of the adult spider. This entire developmental process occurs within the protective silk wrapping of the egg sac.

Some breeders choose to pull the egg sac from the female and incubate it artificially. This approach gives the breeder more control over temperature and humidity during incubation and eliminates the risk of the female destroying or eating the sac. If you choose to pull the egg sac, do so carefully using long forceps while distracting the female with a prey item or gentle prodding from the opposite side of the enclosure. Place the pulled sac in a small container on a bed of slightly dampened vermiculite, and rotate it manually once or twice daily to replicate the female's natural rotation behavior.

Artificial incubation temperatures should be maintained between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit with moderate humidity. Too much moisture can promote mold growth on the sac, while too little can cause the eggs to desiccate. A sealed container with a small number of ventilation holes and a thin layer of damp vermiculite at the bottom provides an effective incubation environment. Check the sac daily for signs of mold, and if any appears, gently remove it with a dry cotton swab.

When the spiderlings are ready to emerge, the sac will begin to move visibly as the nymphs inside become active. The female, if she still has the sac, may assist in opening it by tearing the silk with her fangs. If the sac has been pulled for artificial incubation, the breeder should carefully open it once movement is detected, making a small incision in the silk with fine scissors and gently separating the layers to allow the spiderlings to emerge. Expect anywhere from 100 to over 500 spiderlings from a single egg sac, depending on the size and condition of the female.

Post-Mating & Post-Egg Sac Care

Care for the female after mating and egg sac production focuses on rebuilding her nutritional reserves and allowing her body to recover from the physically demanding reproductive process. A female that has produced and guarded an egg sac for several weeks will often be noticeably thinner and may have depleted her energy reserves significantly. Offer food frequently once the spiderlings have been separated and the female resumes eating, which may take a week or more after the egg sac is opened or removed.

The female may be more defensive and irritable in the weeks following egg sac production, which is a natural behavioral response to the protective hormonal state she was in while guarding her offspring. Handle the enclosure with extra care during this period, and do not attempt to handle the spider until her behavior returns to baseline. Aggressive threat postures, lunging, and hair kicking are all common post-reproductive behaviors that will subside as the female returns to her normal routine.

If the egg sac was infertile, which is not uncommon in captive breeding, the female may eat or destroy the sac herself after several weeks. Infertile sacs that are pulled by the breeder will contain eggs that show no development, appearing as uniform, yellowish spheres without any differentiation into embryonic structures. While an infertile sac is disappointing, it does not indicate a permanent problem, and the female can often be successfully bred again after she has recovered and undergone at least one additional molt.

The male, if he survived the mating process, should be returned to his own enclosure and fed well. His remaining lifespan after mating is limited, typically six months to a year, and keeping him well-fed and comfortable during this time is a matter of responsible care. Some breeders will use a single male for multiple mating attempts with different females, but each introduction carries the risk of the male being killed, so this must be weighed carefully.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Chilean Rose Tarantulas is a rewarding but responsibility-laden undertaking that requires careful consideration before, during, and after the process. A single egg sac can produce hundreds of spiderlings, and the breeder must have a realistic plan for housing, feeding, and rehoming this large number of animals. Without adequate preparation, a breeder can quickly become overwhelmed by the demands of maintaining hundreds of individual enclosures, each requiring regular feeding, watering, and monitoring.

Before breeding, research the current demand for Chilean Rose Tarantula spiderlings in your area and within the broader hobby community. This species is one of the most commonly available tarantulas in the pet trade, and the market for spiderlings can be saturated at times. Producing hundreds of spiderlings when demand is low can result in animals that cannot be rehomed and must be maintained indefinitely at the breeder's expense, or worse, abandoned or culled. Responsible breeders breed with purpose and with a clear plan for the offspring.

Screening potential buyers or adopters is an important aspect of responsible breeding. Providing new keepers with basic care information, including enclosure setup, feeding guidelines, and common health concerns, helps ensure that spiderlings go to homes where they will receive appropriate care. Sourcing breeding stock from unrelated lines whenever possible helps maintain genetic diversity within the captive population. Responsible breeding practices benefit not only the individual animals involved but the long-term health and sustainability of the species within the hobby.
