The juvenile stage of the Indian Stick Insect spans roughly four to six months and encompasses the middle series of molts, typically from the third instar through the fifth or sixth. During this period, the nymphs undergo dramatic increases in size, roughly doubling their length over the course of two or three consecutive molts. Each successive instar reveals a more robust insect that increasingly resembles the adult form in proportions and overall body shape.
Molting intervals during the juvenile phase tend to be slightly longer than those experienced in the earliest nymph stage, typically occurring every three to four weeks under optimal conditions. The process itself remains the same: the insect suspends itself from a branch or the enclosure ceiling, the old exoskeleton splits along the dorsal surface, and the insect slowly extracts itself over a period of thirty minutes to an hour. The newly revealed exoskeleton is pale and soft, gradually darkening and hardening over the following twenty-four hours.
Keepers will notice that juvenile stick insects begin to develop more defined physical features during this stage. Females start to show a broader abdomen, while males, if present, tend to be more slender and develop slightly longer antennae relative to body length. Since Indian Stick Insects are predominantly parthenogenetic, most captive populations consist entirely of females, but occasional males do appear and can be identified during the later juvenile instars.
Growth rate is directly tied to temperature and food quality. Nymphs kept at the warmer end of the acceptable temperature range and provided with fresh, tender bramble leaves will progress through their molts more quickly than those kept in cooler conditions or offered suboptimal food. However, pushing growth too quickly by maintaining excessively high temperatures can lead to stress and shorter overall lifespans, so a moderate and stable environment remains the best approach.
