Continue to furnish the enclosure with plenty of fresh bramble stems anchored in water containers. As the insects grow larger, the stems can be more substantial, with denser leaf coverage. At this stage, the risk of drowning is reduced compared to the hatchling phase, but it remains a preventable hazard that should not be overlooked.

Handling & Interaction

The juvenile stage is the ideal time to begin gentle handling of Indian Stick Insects, as they are now large enough to be picked up without high risk of injury but still small enough to be accustomed to human contact before reaching full adult size. The key to handling stick insects is patience and slow, deliberate movements. Never grab or pinch the insect; instead, place your open hand flat in front of the insect and gently encourage it to walk onto your palm by nudging its rear end with a soft brush or your other hand.

Indian Stick Insects have tiny hooked claws at the tips of their feet that allow them to grip surfaces firmly. When an insect is clinging to a branch and you wish to move it, never pull it free, as this can damage or sever the delicate legs. Instead, gently slide a finger beneath the front feet and work backward, allowing the insect to release its grip naturally before stepping onto your hand. With regular handling, juveniles become quite docile and will sit calmly on a hand or arm for extended periods.

As juveniles approach their penultimate molt, keepers should begin preparing for the transition to sub-adult and eventually adult status. Female nymphs will show a distinctly wider abdomen compared to earlier instars, and their overall body length may reach two to three inches. The intervals between molts lengthen, and the insects spend more time resting and less time in active locomotion between feedings.

This is an important time to assess the health and condition of the colony as a whole. Individuals that have experienced failed molts, lost multiple limbs, or show signs of infection should be separated from the healthy group. While Indian Stick Insects can regenerate lost limbs during subsequent molts, regenerated legs are often shorter or thinner than originals, and severely compromised individuals may struggle to feed and molt successfully as they approach adult size.

A crowded enclosure at this stage significantly increases the risk of a disastrous final molt, which can leave an adult insect permanently deformed.

Common Juvenile Health Concerns

The most frequent health issue during the juvenile stage remains incomplete molting. As the insects grow larger, the molting process becomes more demanding, and environmental conditions must be carefully maintained to support successful sheds. Low humidity is the primary culprit behind stuck sheds, where portions of the old exoskeleton remain adhered to the new body. Keepers should be especially attentive to humidity levels in the twenty-four hours preceding a molt, which can often be anticipated by the insect's reduced activity and refusal to feed.

Leg loss is common during the juvenile phase and is usually the result of a difficult molt, rough handling, or an insect snagging its leg on a rough surface within the enclosure. While regeneration is possible over subsequent molts, each lost limb compromises the insect's ability to climb and feed effectively. Smooth-surfaced enclosures and careful handling practices significantly reduce the incidence of leg injuries.

Mite infestations can become problematic during the juvenile stage, particularly in enclosures that are not cleaned regularly. Grain mites and other tiny arthropods thrive in warm, humid environments rich in organic debris, and they can overwhelm a stick insect colony if left unchecked. Regular substrate changes, prompt removal of old food and frass, and avoiding over-misting are the best preventive measures. If mites are detected, a thorough cleaning of the enclosure and replacement of all substrate and food material is usually sufficient to resolve the problem.
