Indian Stick Insects reach full adulthood after completing their final molt, which typically occurs between four and six months of age depending on environmental conditions and food quality. The final molt is the most dramatic transformation in the insect's life, producing a fully formed adult that is significantly larger than the preceding sub-adult instar. Adult females generally measure three to four inches in length, while the less common males tend to be somewhat smaller and more slender.
The most reliable indicator that an Indian Stick Insect has reached full maturity is the cessation of molting. Unlike the juvenile phase, where regular exoskeleton sheds occur every few weeks, adult stick insects do not molt again for the remainder of their lives. This means that any damage to the exoskeleton, lost limbs, or physical deformities sustained after the final molt are permanent and cannot be corrected through regeneration.
Adult females can be distinguished by their broader, more robust abdomen, which will become even more pronounced once egg production begins. The body coloration of adults tends to settle into a stable shade ranging from green to brown, often influenced by the ambient environment and humidity levels within the enclosure. Some individuals display a striking mottled pattern along the thorax and abdomen that enhances their twig-like camouflage.
Shortly after their final molt, adult females begin producing eggs, often within the first two to three weeks of reaching maturity. This marks the beginning of the most active and metabolically demanding phase of their lives, during which nutrition, hydration, and environmental stability become especially important for maintaining health and egg viability.
