Cleaning the adult enclosure is a more involved task than maintaining a nymph container due to the greater volume of frass and the presence of eggs scattered across the substrate. Use a fine sieve to separate eggs from frass and substrate material, as the small, seed-like eggs can easily be discarded accidentally during routine cleaning.

Preventive Health Maintenance

The primary preventive health measure is consistent husbandry: regular cleaning, fresh food, appropriate humidity, and stable temperatures. A lost leg or antenna at this stage is permanent, so careful handling and a hazard-free enclosure environment are especially important. Remove any sharp edges, rough surfaces, or loose materials inside the enclosure that could snag or injure a climbing insect. Mite prevention should continue through the adult stage. Regular substrate replacement, prompt removal of decaying plant material, and avoidance of over-misting all contribute to keeping mite populations in check. If a mite infestation does occur, relocate all insects to a clean temporary container while the main enclosure is thoroughly washed with hot water, dried completely, and fitted with fresh substrate and food plants before the insects are returned.

Monitor the body condition of adult insects regularly. A healthy adult Indian Stick Insect has a smooth, firm exoskeleton and moves confidently along branches and leaves. Once darkness falls, they become active and purposeful, moving to fresh leaf surfaces to feed and traversing the enclosure with a slow, deliberate gait that reinforces their twig-like appearance.

The camouflage behavior of adults is remarkably effective. When undisturbed, an adult Indian Stick Insect pressed against a branch is virtually indistinguishable from the plant material around it, even to an observer looking directly at the enclosure. This cryptic ability extends to the swaying behavior, which adults perform more convincingly than juveniles due to their greater size and mass. The slow, rhythmic rocking mimics a branch swaying in a gentle breeze and can continue for several minutes if the insect senses a potential threat.

Adult females regularly drop eggs from their perches as they move about the enclosure, flicking each small, barrel-shaped egg to the ground below with a subtle motion of the abdomen. This egg-laying behavior is continuous rather than occurring in discrete clutches, with a single female producing several eggs per day over the course of her adult life. The eggs accumulate on the substrate and can be collected during routine cleaning.

Adults that have been handled regularly since their juvenile stage tend to be calm and compliant when picked up, resting motionless on a hand or arm for extended periods. Individuals that have not been socialized to handling may display defensive behaviors including catalepsy, leg autotomy in extreme cases, and the release of mild defensive secretions. Consistent gentle interaction throughout their lives produces the most docile and handleable adults.

Colony Management

Managing a colony of adult Indian Stick Insects requires attention to population dynamics, space requirements, and the inevitable accumulation of eggs. A single adult female can produce hundreds of eggs over her lifetime, and without active management, a small colony can balloon into an unmanageable population within a single generation. Keepers should establish an egg management strategy early in the adult phase to maintain control over colony size.

The simplest approach to population control is to collect eggs during regular cleaning and freeze them for forty-eight hours before disposal. This humanely prevents hatching while allowing the keeper to retain only as many eggs as desired for the next generation. Alternatively, eggs can be shared with other hobbyists, donated to schools as educational resources, or distributed through local invertebrate keeping communities.

Space management becomes increasingly important as the colony matures. Even though Indian Stick Insects tolerate high densities, there is a practical upper limit dictated by the available leaf surface for feeding. A colony that exceeds its food capacity will show signs of stress including reduced body condition, slower growth in any remaining juveniles, and increased competition for prime feeding positions on the freshest leaves. Splitting the colony into multiple enclosures or rehoming surplus adults prevents these overcrowding effects.

Keepers maintaining multiple generations simultaneously should consider housing adults and newly hatched nymphs in separate enclosures. While adults are not aggressive toward nymphs, the tiny hatchlings can be accidentally crushed by the much larger adults as they move about the enclosure. Separating the age groups also makes it easier to tailor environmental conditions and food plant selection to the specific needs of each life stage.
