This adaptability is part of the species' remarkable camouflage strategy in the wild.

Size increases noticeably with each molt during this stage. A third-instar ghost mantis may measure around half an inch, while a sixth-instar nymph can reach close to an inch and a half. The rate of growth depends heavily on feeding frequency and temperature. Warmer temperatures within the safe range accelerate metabolism and shorten the interval between molts, while cooler temperatures slow development. Keepers who want to extend the overall lifespan of their mantis can keep temperatures at the lower end of the acceptable range to slow the pace of maturation.

Segment counting on the underside of the abdomen is the most reliable sexing method. Females typically have six visible abdominal segments, while males have eight. Nutrition & Diet Transition

As ghost mantis nymphs grow through the juvenile instars, their dietary needs shift to accommodate their increasing size and energy demands. The small Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies that sustained them as hatchlings become inadequate, and the transition to larger prey items is necessary. By the third or fourth instar, most ghost mantis nymphs are ready to take on the larger Drosophila hydei fruit flies, and by the fifth or sixth instar, they can begin tackling small houseflies, blue bottle fly spikes that have emerged as adults, or small crickets.

The transition to larger prey should be gradual and guided by observation. Offer the new, larger prey alongside the familiar smaller flies initially, and watch to see if the nymph successfully captures and consumes the bigger items. A juvenile ghost mantis that is intimidated by prey that is too large will either ignore it or display a defensive posture rather than a hunting response. Prey items should generally be no longer than two-thirds the length of the mantis's body to ensure safe feeding.

Feeding frequency during the juvenile stage can be slightly less intensive than during the nymph period, but consistency remains important. The characteristic swaying motion that ghost mantises use to mimic a leaf moving in a breeze becomes more pronounced and deliberate, serving both as camouflage and as a means of gauging distance to potential prey.

The ghost mantis's temperament during the juvenile stage is generally calm and docile compared to many other mantis species. They rarely display the aggressive threat postures common in larger species when approached, instead relying on their camouflage to avoid detection. This docile nature makes them suitable for handling, though handling should always be kept brief and gentle to avoid stressing the animal or risking injury during falls.

Curiosity about their environment becomes more apparent as juveniles grow. They will explore their enclosure, test different perching spots, and may reposition themselves based on temperature gradients or light levels within the habitat. A juvenile ghost mantis that consistently retreats to the warmest or most humid corner of the enclosure may be indicating that overall conditions need adjustment. Paying attention to where the mantis chooses to spend its time provides valuable feedback about the enclosure environment.

Molting Through the Instars

Molting continues to be one of the most critical and vulnerable events in a juvenile ghost mantis's life. Each successive molt carries risk, and the consequences of a failed molt become more severe as the animal grows larger. A mismolt at the seventh instar can be fatal or permanently disabling, whereas a young nymph might recover minor limb damage at its next shed. Understanding the molting process and supporting it through proper husbandry is one of the keeper's most important responsibilities.

The signs that a molt is approaching become easier to recognize with experience. The mantis will stop eating, sometimes for several days before the molt occurs. Its body may appear slightly swollen or the exoskeleton may look dull and slightly translucent as the new exoskeleton forms beneath. The mantis will seek out a high perching spot and hang upside down, often from the mesh ceiling of the enclosure. This inverted position allows gravity to assist in pulling the old exoskeleton away from the body.

During the molt itself, the old exoskeleton splits along the back and the mantis slowly emerges. The newly molted mantis is soft, pale, and extremely vulnerable. Its new exoskeleton takes several hours to fully harden and darken, during which time the mantis must not be disturbed, handled, or offered food. Any interference during this hardening period can result in permanent deformities. Even the presence of feeder insects in the enclosure can be problematic, as crickets or flies may land on the soft-bodied mantis and cause damage.

Humidity plays a decisive role in successful molting. The enclosure should be misted lightly a few hours before an anticipated molt to ensure the air is sufficiently moist. Dry conditions cause the old exoskeleton to adhere too tightly to the new one beneath, making it difficult or impossible for the mantis to extract itself cleanly. Maintaining consistent humidity throughout the juvenile stage, rather than attempting to spike it only at molting time, produces the best outcomes.

Enclosure Upgrades & Habitat

As the ghost mantis grows through the juvenile instars, its enclosure needs to grow as well. The small deli cups or containers suitable for early nymphs become cramped and insufficient by the mid-instars. A general guideline is that the enclosure should be at least twice as wide and three times as tall as the mantis's body length. Since ghost mantises are arboreal and prefer to hang from elevated surfaces, vertical space is more important than floor area.

A well-furnished juvenile enclosure should include a variety of climbing surfaces and perching options. Thin branches, artificial plants with textured leaves, and mesh or screen panels all serve this purpose well. The ghost mantis's leaf-mimicking camouflage is most effective when the enclosure includes materials that complement its appearance, such as dried leaves or brown and green foliage. Beyond aesthetics, these materials provide the mantis with a sense of security that reduces stress and supports normal behavior.

Substrate at the bottom of the enclosure serves primarily to help regulate humidity. Coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, or a simple layer of paper towel are all acceptable options. The substrate should be kept slightly damp but never waterlogged. Standing water at the bottom of the enclosure remains a drowning risk even for larger juveniles, and a saturated substrate promotes mold and bacterial growth that can compromise the mantis's health.

Ventilation must be adequate to prevent stagnant, overly humid air while still maintaining the moisture levels the species requires. Enclosures with mesh or screen tops provide excellent airflow, but they may allow humidity to escape too quickly in dry home environments. In such cases, partially covering the mesh with plastic wrap or using an enclosure with smaller ventilation holes can help retain moisture. Monitoring with a small hygrometer inside the enclosure takes the guesswork out of humidity management and is a worthwhile investment for any keeper raising ghost mantises through the juvenile stage.

Handling & Interaction

Ghost mantises are widely regarded as one of the most handleable mantis species, and the juvenile stage is an excellent time to begin gentle interaction if the keeper wishes to do so. Their calm temperament and reluctance to fly make them cooperative subjects, and regular brief handling sessions can help the mantis become accustomed to the keeper's presence and movements. That said, handling is always for the keeper's benefit and enrichment rather than the mantis's, and it should never take priority over the animal's welfare.

When handling a juvenile ghost mantis, allow the mantis to walk onto your hand rather than grasping it. Place your open hand in front of the mantis and gently encourage it to step forward by lightly touching its rear end with a soft brush or your other hand. Move slowly and avoid sudden motions, as quick movements can startle the mantis and trigger a flight or drop response. Even though ghost mantises are not strong fliers at this stage, a startled nymph can leap from your hand and sustain injury from a fall.

Handling sessions should be kept short, generally no more than five to ten minutes, and should be avoided entirely when the mantis is in pre-molt or has recently completed a molt. The stress of handling during these vulnerable periods can interfere with the molting process or damage the soft new exoskeleton. Similarly, do not handle the mantis immediately after it has eaten, as the disturbance can cause regurgitation.

Always handle your ghost mantis over a soft surface or close to the ground to minimize the risk of injury from accidental falls. A bed, a carpeted floor, or a table covered with a soft cloth are all appropriate handling areas. Keep the area free of other pets, open windows, and potential hazards. While the ghost mantis is docile, it is also fragile, and a moment of inattention can result in injury or escape that is difficult to recover from given the animal's exceptional camouflage.

Preparing for Adulthood

As the ghost mantis progresses through its final juvenile instars, the keeper should begin preparing for the transition to adulthood. The last molt, known as the final or imaginal molt, is the most consequential of the mantis's life. During this molt, the ghost mantis will develop its full adult features, including functional wings in the case of males. Females develop shorter, non-functional wing stubs. This final molt requires the most careful attention to humidity and environmental stability of any molt in the mantis's life.

In the instars leading up to the final molt, the mantis's appetite often increases noticeably. This growth spurt fuels the energy demands of the dramatic transformation ahead. Keepers should respond to this increased appetite by offering more frequent meals and ensuring prey size is appropriate for the mantis's current dimensions. A well-fed sub-adult ghost mantis has the best chance of completing its final molt successfully and emerging as a healthy, fully formed adult.

The enclosure should be evaluated and potentially upgraded one final time before the imaginal molt. The mantis will need ample vertical space to hang freely during this particularly demanding molt, as it is larger and heavier than at any previous stage. Ensure that the perching surface at the top of the enclosure is secure and provides a reliable grip. A fall during the final molt can result in fatal injuries or irreparable wing deformities.

Keepers interested in breeding should finalize their identification of sex during this pre-adult period and begin planning pairings. Males typically mature slightly faster than females and have a shorter overall lifespan, so timing the maturation of breeding pairs requires some forethought. Acquiring individuals of different ages or from different sources can help ensure that a mature male is available when the female reaches breeding condition after her final molt.
