The juvenile stage of the ghost mantis spans roughly from the third instar through the sixth or seventh instar, depending on the individual and its sex. During this period, the nymph undergoes a dramatic physical transformation. The plain, dark-bodied appearance of the early instars gives way to the elaborate camouflage that makes this species so visually striking. The conical crown projection on top of the head becomes more prominent with each successive molt, and the flattened, leaf-like lobes on the legs develop increasing complexity and definition.
Color variation becomes apparent during the juvenile instars. Ghost mantises can display a range of colorations including shades of brown, tan, green, and near-black. The color a particular individual develops is influenced by environmental factors such as humidity, lighting, and the color of the surfaces in their enclosure rather than being strictly genetic. Nymphs kept in drier, brighter conditions tend to develop lighter coloration, while those in more humid, dimmer setups often darken. This adaptability is part of the species' remarkable camouflage strategy in the wild.
Size increases noticeably with each molt during this stage. A third-instar ghost mantis may measure around half an inch, while a sixth-instar nymph can reach close to an inch and a half. The rate of growth depends heavily on feeding frequency and temperature. Warmer temperatures within the safe range accelerate metabolism and shorten the interval between molts, while cooler temperatures slow development. Keepers who want to extend the overall lifespan of their mantis can keep temperatures at the lower end of the acceptable range to slow the pace of maturation.
Sexual dimorphism begins to become visible during the later juvenile instars. Females tend to be slightly larger and broader-bodied than males of the same instar. Segment counting on the underside of the abdomen is the most reliable sexing method. Females typically have six visible abdominal segments, while males have eight. Identifying sex during this stage allows keepers to plan for future breeding or to anticipate the different adult behaviors associated with each sex.
