Assessing readiness in the male is somewhat simpler. A healthy adult male ghost mantis that is active, alert, and displaying wing-fluttering behavior is likely ready to mate. Males become noticeably more restless when they detect female pheromones, pacing their enclosure and orienting toward the female's location. This behavioral change is a reliable indicator that the male is sexually motivated and ready for introduction.

Before attempting a breeding pairing, both individuals should be in good health with no signs of injury, illness, or recent stress. A male with damaged or missing raptorial forelegs will have difficulty maintaining his position during mating, and a female that is underfed or dehydrated may be more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior toward the male. The Mating Process

Having a separate container ready to receive the male as soon as he separates from the female minimizes his exposure time. A single successful mating is usually sufficient to fertilize multiple oothecae, though some breeders allow a second pairing a week or two later to ensure thorough fertilization.

Ootheca Production & Care

Following a successful mating, the female ghost mantis will begin producing oothecae within one to four weeks. An ootheca is a hardened egg case that the female secretes as a foamy mass which solidifies upon contact with air, encasing and protecting the developing eggs inside. Ghost mantis oothecae are relatively small compared to those of larger mantis species, typically measuring about one inch in length, and they are usually deposited on branches, enclosure walls, or the underside of the mesh top.

The process of laying an ootheca takes several hours and should not be interrupted. The female will position herself at her chosen site and slowly extrude the foamy mass while manipulating it with her abdomen to shape it into the characteristic ootheca form. Prepare appropriately sized feeder cultures of Drosophila melanogaster so that food is available within 24 to 48 hours of hatching.

Hatching itself is a rapid and remarkable event. The nymphs emerge from the ootheca in a coordinated wave, often within a span of just a few hours. A single ghost mantis ootheca can produce 20 to 60 nymphs, though clutch sizes vary based on the female's age, health, and nutritional status. The emerging nymphs are encased in thin membranes from which they must wriggle free, and they will initially hang near the ootheca on thin threads before dispersing.

Not every ootheca will hatch successfully. Infertile oothecae, which females can produce even without mating, will never yield nymphs. Oothecae that were exposed to temperatures that were too cold, too hot, or too dry during incubation may also fail. If an ootheca has not hatched after eight weeks under appropriate conditions, it is likely nonviable and can be discarded. Keepers should not open oothecae to inspect them, as this will destroy any developing embryos inside.

Managing Large Clutches

A successful hatching event can produce dozens of tiny nymphs simultaneously, and the keeper must be prepared to manage this sudden influx of new lives. The communal nature of ghost mantises provides a significant advantage here, as nymphs can be housed together in groups rather than requiring individual enclosures. However, even with communal housing, a clutch of 40 or more nymphs requires planning, resources, and space.

Immediate priorities after hatching include providing adequate food, appropriate housing, and proper environmental conditions for the nymphs. Small fruit flies should be introduced within 24 to 48 hours, and the nymph enclosures should be maintained at the temperature and humidity ranges appropriate for first-instar care. Groups of 10 to 15 nymphs can be housed together in appropriately sized containers, with multiple containers prepared in advance for larger clutches.

Keepers who do not intend to raise the entire clutch should make arrangements before hatching for rehoming surplus nymphs. Ghost mantises are popular in the invertebrate keeping community, and finding homes for healthy nymphs is generally achievable through online forums, local reptile and invertebrate groups, or specialty pet shops. Having a distribution plan in place before the nymphs arrive prevents the keeper from being overwhelmed by more animals than they can responsibly care for.

Feeder insect production must scale to match the number of nymphs being raised. A single fruit fly culture that sustained one or two adult mantises will be rapidly depleted by a group of hungry nymphs. Starting multiple fruit fly cultures two to three weeks before the expected hatch date ensures a continuous supply of appropriately sized prey. Running out of food for a large group of communally housed nymphs dramatically increases the risk of cannibalism and should be avoided through proactive planning.

Responsible Breeding Practices

Breeding ghost mantises carries responsibilities that extend beyond the mechanics of pairing and incubation. Responsible breeders consider the welfare of both the breeding adults and their offspring, the genetic health of the population they are contributing to, and the demand for the nymphs they produce. Breeding without a plan for the resulting nymphs leads to overcrowding, substandard care, and unnecessary loss of life.

Genetic diversity is an important consideration in any captive breeding program, even at the hobbyist level. Repeatedly breeding siblings or closely related individuals over multiple generations can lead to inbreeding depression, which manifests as reduced hatch rates, smaller clutch sizes, increased susceptibility to disease, and overall decreased vigor. Introducing unrelated stock periodically, either through purchasing from different breeders or trading with other keepers, helps maintain a healthy genetic base.

The health and welfare of breeding females deserves particular attention. Continuous reproduction is physically taxing, and a female that produces ootheca after ootheca without adequate nutrition and rest will experience accelerated decline and a shortened lifespan. While it is not possible to prevent a mated female from producing oothecae, ensuring she receives ample food and water between clutches supports her health and the viability of her offspring.

Finally, breeders should be aware of local regulations regarding the keeping and distribution of invertebrates. While ghost mantises are legal to keep in most areas, some jurisdictions have restrictions on the sale, trade, or transport of non-native invertebrate species. Familiarizing yourself with relevant regulations before distributing nymphs protects both the breeder and the recipient, and ensures that the hobby remains in good standing with wildlife management authorities.
