This extended growth period means that decisions about nutrition, exercise, and the introduction of work must account for the ongoing development of bones, joints, and soft tissues.
At weaning, which typically occurs between four and six months of age, a Haflinger foal will stand roughly 10 to 12 hands tall and weigh several hundred pounds. Over the next year, growth is rapid but uneven, with the hindquarters often appearing higher than the withers as the young horse grows in fits and starts. This temporary awkwardness is completely normal and resolves as the horse matures. By 18 months, the Haflinger's characteristic stocky build and sturdy legs begin to emerge more definitively.
