Blenny fry emerge from their eggs as tiny, nearly transparent larvae that are immediately vulnerable to the conditions of their environment. In the wild, male blennies guard the eggs until hatching, and the moment the fry are free-swimming they must fend for themselves. In a captive setting, the first day of life is the most precarious, and preparation in the hours leading up to hatching can make the difference between a successful brood and total loss.
During the initial hours after hatching, blenny fry will still be absorbing the remnants of their yolk sac. This small internal reserve provides a brief window of nutrition before the fry must begin feeding on their own. It is critical not to disturb the fry excessively during this period, as stress from sudden water movement, bright lighting, or aggressive tank mates can cause immediate mortality. If fry have hatched in the main display tank, carefully transferring them to a dedicated rearing container using a gentle scoop or wide-bore pipette is strongly recommended.
Water quality in the rearing vessel must be pristine from the very start. Temperature should match the parent tank precisely, and salinity should be stable. Even minor fluctuations in these parameters can prove fatal to larvae that lack the physiological resilience of older fish. An air-driven sponge filter set to a very low flow rate will provide biological filtration without creating currents strong enough to injure or exhaust the fry.
Lighting should be kept dim but not completely dark during the first day. Blenny fry are photosensitive and will orient toward gentle light sources, which can later help guide them toward food. Avoid overhead lighting that is too intense, as this can cause stress behaviors such as erratic swimming or settling motionless on the bottom of the rearing container.
