Attempting to breed fish that are too young, too small, or in poor health increases the likelihood of failed spawns, infertile eggs, and compromised parental behavior.
Conditioning breeding candidates involves providing an enriched diet over several weeks to build up the energy reserves needed for successful reproduction. Increasing the frequency and variety of feedings, with an emphasis on protein-rich frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality pellets, supports egg development in females and overall vitality in males. Females that are well conditioned will develop a visibly rounded abdomen as their egg load matures.
Water quality must be maintained at the highest possible standard during the conditioning period. Pristine conditions with stable temperature, salinity, and pH signal to the fish that environmental circumstances are favorable for reproduction. Some breeders report success with slight adjustments to photoperiod or temperature to simulate seasonal changes that may trigger spawning behavior in certain species, though these manipulations should be subtle and gradual to avoid stressing the fish.
Sexing blennies can be challenging, as sexual dimorphism varies considerably across species. In some species, males are larger, more colorful, or possess more elaborate ornamental features such as larger cirri or extended dorsal spines. In others, the differences are minimal and may only become apparent when a female is gravid with eggs. Observing courtship behavior is often the most reliable way to confirm the sex of individual fish.
