The most reliable method of sexing juvenile Mbuna is venting, which involves gently examining the genital papilla of the fish. Males have two small openings of similar size, while females have one small opening and one larger opening for egg release. This technique requires practice and a gentle hand, as the fish must be briefly netted and held for examination. It is most accurate when the fish are at least two inches long and approaching sexual maturity.

Behavioral observation provides useful supporting evidence for sex determination. Males tend to display more intensely, defend territories more aggressively, and show brighter coloration than females. In many Mbuna species, males develop egg spots on their anal fins, which are circular markings that play a role in the breeding process. Regular observation is the cornerstone of health monitoring. Spend a few minutes each day watching the fish during feeding and at rest. Healthy juveniles are active, colorful, and eager to eat. Warning signs include clamped fins, rapid or labored breathing, white or fuzzy patches on the body, loss of color, lethargy, bloating, and trailing feces. Any of these symptoms warrants closer investigation and potentially a water quality test.

Water quality remains the primary determinant of juvenile health. Continue performing weekly water changes of 20 to 30 percent, and test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH regularly.
