The foundation of peak health is water quality consistency. Adult Mbuna are hardier than juveniles and can tolerate brief fluctuations, but chronic exposure to suboptimal conditions will dull their colors, suppress their immune systems, and shorten their lifespans. Weekly water changes of 25 to 30 percent are the standard for a well-stocked Mbuna tank, though heavily stocked systems may require more frequent changes. Maintain temperature between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 7.8 and 8.6, and keep nitrates below 20 parts per million.

Filter maintenance is a critical and often overlooked component of adult Mbuna care. Canister filters should be cleaned every four to six weeks, with biological media rinsed gently in old tank water to preserve beneficial bacteria colonies. The staple diet should consist of high-quality spirulina-based flakes or pellets designed for herbivorous cichlids. These foods provide the fiber, vitamins, and minerals that Mbuna need without the excess protein and fat that can cause digestive problems. Pellets are often preferable to flakes for adult fish because they produce less waste and can be portioned more precisely. Sinking pellets are a good option for ensuring that subordinate fish near the bottom of the tank get their share.

The physical layout of the tank directly influences the behavior and wellbeing of every fish in the system, making aquascaping one of the most consequential decisions a keeper makes. A thoughtfully designed Mbuna tank reduces aggression, supports natural behaviors, and showcases the fish at their most impressive.

Rockwork is the defining feature of a Mbuna habitat. Stacks of natural rock such as limestone, lace rock, or ocean rock should fill at least half to two-thirds of the tank volume, creating a complex maze of caves, crevices, overhangs, and tunnels. Each adult male will claim a primary cave or territory within this structure, and the availability of numerous territories prevents any single male from dominating the entire tank. Rocks must be securely stacked, ideally resting on the tank bottom glass rather than on substrate, to prevent collapse caused by the vigorous digging behavior of Mbuna.

Substrate choice affects both aesthetics and fish behavior. Fine sand or crushed coral are the preferred substrates for Mbuna tanks. Mbuna are prolific diggers, constantly rearranging sand around their territories and excavating pits as part of their breeding displays. Crushed coral has the added benefit of buffering the water toward the alkaline pH that these fish prefer. Gravel is generally less suitable because small pieces can be ingested and cause impaction.

Malawi bloat is the most feared condition among Mbuna keepers and deserves special attention. This condition, which presents as abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, white or stringy feces, and lethargy, is often linked to dietary causes but can also be triggered by stress or parasitic infection. By the time visible bloating appears, the condition may already be advanced. Prevention through proper diet, clean water, and stress reduction is far more effective than attempting to treat active cases. Any fish showing early symptoms should be isolated immediately, and a veterinarian experienced with fish should be consulted.

External parasites such as Ich and gill flukes can appear in even well-maintained tanks, often triggered by temperature fluctuations or the introduction of new fish without proper quarantine. Regular visual inspection of the fish during feeding times allows keepers to spot the telltale signs early. White spots, excessive flashing or scratching against rocks, rapid gill movement, and cloudy eyes are all indicators that warrant investigation. Maintaining stable temperatures and quarantining all new additions for a minimum of three weeks are the best preventive measures.

Water testing should continue on a regular schedule even with an established tank. Testing for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH at least weekly provides an early warning system for filtration problems or overfeeding issues. Keeping a log of test results over time helps identify gradual trends that might otherwise go unnoticed, such as slowly rising nitrate levels or a drifting pH that could eventually stress the fish.

Social Dynamics & Stocking

The social structure of an adult Mbuna tank is a complex, ever-evolving hierarchy that requires ongoing attention from the keeper. Unlike many community fish that coexist peacefully, Mbuna maintain their social order through constant displays of dominance, submission, and territorial defense. This is natural behavior, not a problem to be solved, but it must be managed to prevent any individual from bearing an unsustainable level of aggression.

The cornerstone of Mbuna stocking strategy is controlled overstocking. While counterintuitive for most fishkeeping scenarios, maintaining a higher density of fish in a Mbuna tank distributes aggression across many targets, preventing any single fish from being singled out and harassed relentlessly. A general guideline is one inch of fish per one to two gallons of water, but this is only viable with robust filtration and diligent maintenance. The keeper must balance the benefits of overstocking against the increased biological load on the filtration system.

Species selection and ratios within the tank require careful planning. Avoid housing species that share similar coloration or body patterns, as Mbuna reserve their most intense aggression for fish that resemble themselves. A well-planned Mbuna tank features three to five visually distinct species, each represented by one male and three to four females. This structure minimizes both intraspecific and interspecific aggression while creating a visually stunning display of contrasting colors and patterns.

Periodic reassessment of stocking is necessary as the tank matures. Fish grow, die, and breed, changing the social dynamics over time. A male that was manageable as a juvenile may become a relentless tyrant as an adult. New fry that survive in the main tank add to the population. Keepers should be prepared to rehome fish when necessary to maintain balance, and should resist the temptation to add new species to an established community without careful consideration of the potential consequences.

Algae Management & Tank Cleaning

Algae is an inseparable part of the Mbuna keeping experience. In their natural habitat along the rocky littoral zone of Lake Malawi, Mbuna spend most of their waking hours grazing on the aufwuchs, a layer of algae, biofilm, and associated microorganisms that coats every rock surface. In captivity, allowing a controlled amount of algae growth on tank rocks provides an important supplemental food source and encourages natural grazing behavior.

The distinction between beneficial and problematic algae growth lies in balance. A thin green film on rocks and back glass is healthy and welcomed by the fish. However, thick mats of hair algae, blue-green algae, or brown diatom blooms indicate underlying imbalances in the tank, typically excess nutrients from overfeeding or insufficient water changes, or improper lighting duration. Addressing the root cause rather than simply scrubbing the algae away provides a lasting solution.

Tank cleaning for adult Mbuna should follow a consistent schedule. During weekly water changes, use an algae scraper on the front and side glass panels while leaving the back glass and rocks for the fish to graze. Vacuum the substrate lightly to remove accumulated detritus, being careful not to disturb rockwork or the fish excessively. Avoid deep-cleaning the entire tank at once, as this can disrupt biological filtration and stress the fish. Instead, rotate maintenance tasks so that different areas of the tank receive attention on different weeks.

Equipment maintenance extends beyond the filter. Heaters should be inspected regularly for proper function and accuracy, as a malfunctioning heater can cause temperature swings that stress the fish and trigger disease. Air pumps, powerheads, and any supplemental equipment should be checked monthly. Tubing and fittings degrade over time and should be replaced at the first sign of cracking or leaking. A well-maintained system runs predictably, and predictability is exactly what Mbuna need to thrive.
