Lambing Preparation

Essential supplies include clean towels, navel disinfectant, colostrum replacer, lamb feeding bottles and nipples, a digital thermometer, lubricant for assisted deliveries, and a lambing record book or sheets.

Each pen should measure approximately five feet by five feet, large enough for the ewe to move comfortably while keeping her lamb close. Postpartum Care

The immediate postpartum period requires close attention to both the ewe and her newborn lambs. A retained placenta beyond 12 hours warrants veterinary consultation, as it can lead to infection and serious complications. Do not attempt to manually remove a retained placenta, as this can cause hemorrhage and uterine damage.

Ensure the ewe's udder is functional and producing milk by gently expressing a small amount from each teat shortly after lambing. Check for hard, hot, or swollen udder tissue that might indicate mastitis, and confirm that the teat openings are clear and milk flows freely. The ewe's nutritional demands peak during early lactation, particularly if she is nursing twins or triplets. A lactating Suffolk ewe producing milk for twins may require two to three times the energy intake of a dry, non-pregnant ewe. Provide high-quality hay, grain supplementation, and unlimited access to fresh water. Responsible Breeding Ethics

Every breeding decision should be made with clear goals in mind, whether those goals relate to improving flock performance, preserving breed characteristics, producing quality market lambs, or maintaining a sustainable flock size that matches the available resources.

Selection criteria for breeding stock should prioritize structural soundness, reproductive efficiency, maternal ability, growth rate, and temperament. Avoid the temptation to breed animals with known health problems, poor conformation, or difficult temperaments simply because they are available. The genetic contribution of each breeding animal echoes through multiple generations, and compromises made today create management challenges for years to come. Culling underperforming animals from the breeding program, while sometimes emotionally difficult, is essential for flock improvement.

Genetic diversity within the flock deserves ongoing attention. Using the same ram across all ewes for multiple consecutive years narrows the genetic base and increases the risk of inbreeding depression, which manifests as reduced fertility, lower disease resistance, and decreased overall vigor. Introduce new genetics regularly through the purchase or lease of unrelated rams, and maintain records of parentage to avoid inadvertent matings between closely related animals.

Consider the market and homes available for the lambs your breeding program will produce before committing to breeding decisions. Producing more lambs than can be responsibly marketed, retained, or placed creates welfare concerns and financial losses. A well-managed breeding program balances productivity with the practical realities of lamb marketing, pasture capacity, labor availability, and the shepherd's ability to provide quality care during the demanding lambing and rearing period.
