Determining when a Nubian doe is ready for breeding involves evaluating both physical maturity and overall health rather than relying solely on age. While Nubian does can reach puberty as early as four to five months, breeding at this age is strongly discouraged because the doe's body has not yet developed sufficiently to support a healthy pregnancy and kidding. Most experienced breeders recommend waiting until a doe is at least eighty percent of her expected adult weight and no younger than eight months, with many preferring to wait until the doe is twelve to eighteen months old for her first breeding.

Physical readiness goes beyond body weight. The doe should be in good body condition, free of parasites, current on vaccinations, and structurally sound. Her hooves should be properly maintained, and she should have no history of unresolved health problems. Failure to return to heat approximately twenty-one days after breeding is a suggestive but not definitive indicator of pregnancy, as some does experience false pregnancies or silent heats. Blood tests measuring pregnancy-specific hormones are another option and can be performed by your veterinarian.

The gestation period for Nubian goats averages 150 days, though normal variation ranges from 145 to 155 days. During the first three months of pregnancy, the developing kids are small and the doe's nutritional requirements are only slightly elevated above maintenance levels. Good-quality hay, browse, and access to minerals are typically sufficient during this early stage. Avoid overfeeding grain during early pregnancy, as excessive weight gain predisposes does to pregnancy toxemia later in gestation.

Some does become unusually affectionate toward their caretakers, while others prefer solitude. First-time mothers may appear confused or anxious, and staying nearby without being intrusive can provide reassurance. Experienced does often kid quickly and efficiently, but first-time mothers may have longer labor and may benefit from closer monitoring.

Know the stages of normal labor and the timeline for each. The first stage, during which the cervix dilates, can last several hours and is characterized by restlessness and mild discomfort. The second stage, active pushing and delivery, should produce the first kid within thirty to forty-five minutes of hard pushing. If the doe has been pushing actively for more than an hour without progress, or if you see abnormal presentation such as only one leg or a tail appearing, contact your veterinarian immediately. Having an experienced goat mentor or veterinarian on call during your first few kidding seasons is invaluable.

Postpartum Care

Immediate postpartum care focuses on ensuring the health of both the doe and her kids. After delivery, confirm that the doe has passed all placentas, which should occur within twelve hours of kidding. Retained placentas can lead to serious uterine infection and require veterinary attention. Do not attempt to manually remove a retained placenta, as this can cause hemorrhage or further complications. Monitor the doe for signs of infection such as fever, foul-smelling discharge, depression, or loss of appetite in the days following kidding.

The doe's nutritional needs are at their highest immediately postpartum and during peak lactation. A Nubian doe in full production can yield one to two gallons of milk per day, and her diet must supply sufficient energy, protein, calcium, and phosphorus to sustain this output without depleting her own body reserves. Monitor the doe's udder carefully during the first weeks of lactation. Mastitis, an infection of the mammary gland, can develop rapidly and ranges from mild subclinical cases to severe, life-threatening infections. Check the udder at each milking for heat, swelling, hardness, or pain, and examine the milk for abnormalities such as clots, strings, blood, or watery consistency. Early detection and treatment of mastitis are essential for the doe's health and continued milk production.

The doe's reproductive tract will undergo involution, the process of returning to its non-pregnant state, over the four to six weeks following kidding. During this period, a bloody or mucous vaginal discharge is normal and will gradually diminish. Breeding during the first postpartum heat cycle is not recommended, as the uterus has not fully recovered. Most breeders allow at least two to three months between kidding and rebreeding to give the doe adequate time to recover physically and rebuild her body condition.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible Nubian goat breeding begins with a clear purpose and a realistic plan for every kid that may be produced. Before breeding, consider whether you have appropriate homes or uses for the offspring, including the possibility of multiple kids per pregnancy. The market for quality dairy goats, companion goats, and breeding stock varies by region and season, and overproduction without a placement plan contributes to unwanted goats ending up in neglectful situations or at auction houses where their welfare cannot be guaranteed.

Genetic responsibility is a cornerstone of ethical breeding. Avoid breeding animals with known heritable defects, poor conformation, or health problems that may be passed to offspring. If you are breeding registered Nubians, participate in performance testing and health screening programs that contribute to breed improvement. Maintain accurate records of pedigrees, production data, health histories, and breeding outcomes. These records benefit not only your own program but also contribute to the broader knowledge base for the breed.

The health and welfare of the breeding doe must take priority over production goals. Does should not be bred before they are physically mature, and they should be given adequate recovery time between pregnancies. Breeding a doe every year without rest can lead to premature aging, nutritional depletion, and declining health. A buck living alone in a neglected pen is a welfare concern.
