Breeding a Vizsla before it is physically and mentally mature increases the risk of complications and may produce offspring that inherit problems that would have been detectable with patience.
Health testing is a non-negotiable prerequisite for responsible Vizsla breeding. The breed's parent club recommends specific evaluations including hip and elbow assessments, an ophthalmological examination, thyroid panel, and cardiac evaluation. These tests screen for conditions known to occur in the breed and provide documented evidence that breeding candidates are free from heritable diseases. Results should be registered with an appropriate health database so they are accessible to other breeders and prospective puppy buyers.
Temperament evaluation is equally important, though often given less formal attention than health testing. The Vizsla should possess the breed's characteristic qualities of affection, trainability, energy, and sound nerves. Dogs that exhibit excessive fearfulness, unprovoked aggression, or severe separation anxiety should not be bred, as these traits have both genetic and learned components that can be perpetuated through breeding. Evaluating temperament in working and social contexts provides a fuller picture than observation in a single setting.
Conformation to the breed standard matters as well, not out of vanity but because the standard describes a functional structure suited to the Vizsla's purpose as a versatile hunting companion. Sound structure supports athletic performance and reduces the risk of injury and orthopedic disease. A breeding program that consistently produces dogs with poor structure, regardless of other qualities, is contributing to long-term health problems within the breed.
