Responsible Schipperke breeding begins long before a mating takes place. Both the sire and the dam should be fully mature, in excellent health, and have undergone comprehensive health screenings before being considered as breeding candidates. For Schipperkes, full physical maturity is typically reached between eighteen months and two years of age, though many experienced breeders wait until the female has completed at least two heat cycles before considering a first breeding.
Genetic health testing is a non-negotiable prerequisite for responsible breeding. Schipperkes should be tested for mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB, a progressive neurological condition that is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. A simple DNA test identifies carriers and affected individuals, allowing breeders to make informed pairing decisions that eliminate the risk of producing affected puppies. Eye examinations by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist and patella evaluations should also be completed and registered with the appropriate health database.
Beyond genetic testing, both dogs should receive a thorough veterinary examination that includes blood work, a reproductive assessment, and confirmation that vaccinations and parasite prevention are current. The female should be at a healthy weight, neither underweight nor overweight, as both extremes can negatively affect fertility, pregnancy health, and whelping outcomes. The male should have both testicles fully descended and a semen evaluation may be performed to assess fertility.
Temperament is an equally important consideration. Schipperkes selected for breeding should exhibit the confident, curious, and stable temperament described in the breed standard. Dogs with significant behavioral issues such as unprovoked aggression, extreme fearfulness, or severe separation anxiety should not be bred, as temperament has a strong genetic component and breeding unsound temperaments perpetuates problems in the breed.
