The first day of a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy's life is a critical window that sets the stage for healthy development. Ridgeback litters tend to be moderately large, often ranging from six to ten puppies, and each one should be checked immediately after birth for basic vitality signs. A healthy newborn will begin breathing on its own within moments, wriggle toward the dam, and start rooting for a nipple. The breeder or caretaker should clear any membrane from the face and ensure the umbilical cord is clamped or tied off cleanly to prevent infection.
During these first hours, it is essential that every puppy receives colostrum, the nutrient-dense first milk produced by the dam. Colostrum delivers vital maternal antibodies that protect the puppies from disease during their earliest and most vulnerable weeks. Because Ridgeback litters can be sizable, a watchful eye should be kept to ensure that smaller or weaker puppies are not pushed away from nursing by their larger siblings. Rotating puppies at the nipple or providing supplemental feeding may be necessary.
The birthing area should be warm, dry, and free from drafts. Newborn Ridgebacks cannot regulate their own body temperature and are entirely dependent on the dam's body heat and the ambient warmth of their environment. A whelping box with low sides, clean bedding, and a heat source positioned safely to one side gives puppies a thermal gradient so they can move toward or away from warmth as needed. The dam should be offered fresh water and a light, easily digestible meal once she has finished delivering and is resting comfortably.
Each puppy should be gently examined for any obvious congenital issues. In Rhodesian Ridgebacks, a defining breed characteristic is the ridge of hair running along the spine in the opposite direction of the coat. Some puppies may be born without a ridge or with ridge abnormalities, and while this does not affect their health, it is something breeders typically note. Any puppy that appears lethargic, fails to nurse, or shows signs of distress should be evaluated by a veterinarian promptly.
