Fresh water should be available continuously, as lactation significantly increases fluid requirements.

The dam's emotional state during the postpartum period also requires attention. Some first-time mothers may be anxious, overly protective, or uncertain in their maternal behavior. Providing a calm, consistent environment with minimal disruption helps the dam settle into her maternal role.
