Breeding a Collie responsibly begins long before a mating takes place. Both the sire and the dam should undergo comprehensive health screening to ensure they are physically sound and free from heritable conditions that could be passed to offspring. For Collies, essential screening includes testing for Collie Eye Anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia evaluation, and MDR1 gene status. These tests protect the integrity of the breed and reduce the likelihood of producing puppies with preventable health problems.
Physical maturity is a prerequisite for breeding, and a Collie should not be bred before reaching full skeletal and muscular development. For females, this typically means waiting until at least the second or third heat cycle, which generally occurs around eighteen to twenty-four months of age. Males should be similarly mature, both physically and temperamentally, before being used at stud. Breeding immature dogs increases the risk of complications for the dam and often produces weaker litters.
Temperament evaluation is an essential but sometimes overlooked aspect of breeding readiness. The Collie's gentle, intelligent, and loyal character is one of its defining qualities, and breeding dogs should exemplify these traits. Dogs that display excessive fearfulness, unprovoked aggression, or severe anxiety should not be bred, as temperament has a significant genetic component and these traits can be perpetuated in offspring. A reputable breeder seeks to improve the breed with every litter, not simply to produce puppies.
The decision to breed should also account for practical considerations such as the breeder's ability to care for the dam throughout pregnancy and whelping, to raise a litter of potentially eight to ten puppies for at least eight weeks, and to screen and place each puppy in an appropriate home.
