Breeding a Chow Chow responsibly begins long before any mating takes place. Both the sire and dam should be fully mature, typically no younger than two years of age, before breeding is considered. This allows time for the dogs to reach physical and skeletal maturity, for breed-specific health screenings to be completed, and for temperament to be assessed in its adult form. Breeding immature dogs increases the risk of complications for the dam and can produce offspring that inherit unscreened genetic conditions.
Health testing is a non-negotiable prerequisite for responsible Chow Chow breeding. At minimum, both dogs should have current hip evaluations from a recognized orthopedic registry, eye examinations performed by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, and thyroid panels. The Chow Chow's susceptibility to hip dysplasia, entropion, and hypothyroidism makes these screenings essential for reducing the incidence of heritable conditions in offspring. Additional testing may be recommended based on the specific bloodlines involved.
Temperament should be given equal weight to physical conformation and health in breeding decisions. The Chow Chow is already a breed that requires experienced ownership due to its independent nature and guarding instincts. Breeding dogs with unstable, fearful, or excessively aggressive temperaments perpetuates behavioral problems that make the resulting puppies difficult to place and potentially dangerous. Both the sire and dam should demonstrate the breed's characteristic dignified, calm, and confident disposition.
Financial readiness is a practical consideration that is often underestimated. Breeding involves significant costs including health testing, stud fees or semen shipping, prenatal veterinary care, emergency cesarean section fees, whelping supplies, puppy veterinary care and vaccinations, registration fees, and the ongoing expense of raising a litter for the eight or more weeks before placement. The breeder should be prepared for these costs and for the possibility that complications may increase them substantially.
