Before any breeding takes place, both the sire and the dam should undergo comprehensive health screening. The Basenji is subject to several heritable conditions, and responsible breeders test for Fanconi syndrome, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, and thyroid function at a minimum. DNA tests for Fanconi syndrome and progressive retinal atrophy are widely available and should be performed on every prospective breeding animal.

Beyond health testing, breeding readiness encompasses an evaluation of temperament, conformation, and overall quality relative to the breed standard. A breeding Basenji should exemplify the characteristics that define the breed: a balanced, athletic build, correct ear set and tail carriage, the distinctive wrinkled forehead, and a sound, confident temperament. Breeding dogs with significant faults, whether structural, temperamental, or medical, risks perpetuating problems in future generations.

Age is another important factor. Female Basenjis should not be bred before their second year, and many experienced breeders prefer to wait until the bitch is at least two to three years old, allowing time for full physical maturity and the completion of health testing. Pregnancy & Gestation

Ultrasound is typically the earliest reliable method, capable of detecting embryos as early as 25 to 30 days after breeding. Radiography becomes useful later in gestation, around day 45 onward, and is particularly valuable for counting fetal skeletons to determine litter size in the final weeks before whelping.

Basenji litters tend to be small compared to many other breeds, with an average of four to six puppies. Small litters are not uncommon, and singleton puppies do occur. The small litter size means that each puppy carries greater significance, and complications during pregnancy or whelping can have a proportionally larger impact on the outcome.

During the first half of gestation, the bitch's nutritional and exercise needs change only modestly. She can continue her normal routine with slight increases in food quality and quantity. During the final three weeks, caloric needs increase more significantly as the puppies grow rapidly, and the bitch should be transitioned to a nutrient-dense diet formulated for growth or reproduction. The bitch's body temperature provides a useful indicator of approaching labor. Normal canine body temperature is approximately 101 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. A drop to below 99 degrees typically signals that whelping will begin within 12 to 24 hours. Taking the bitch's temperature twice daily during the final week of gestation helps detect this drop.

Breakers of Basenjis should also be prepared for the possibility of a cesarean section. While most Basenjis whelp naturally, dystocia, or difficult labor, can occur in any breed. Having a veterinarian on call who is aware of the expected whelping date and who is experienced with canine obstetrics provides a safety net for both the dam and her puppies. Delays in seeking help during a complicated delivery can have serious consequences.

Postpartum Care

The hours and days following whelping require close attention to both the dam and her newborn puppies. The bitch should be monitored for normal postpartum recovery, including the passage of all placentas, cessation of heavy bleeding, adequate milk production, and a return to normal appetite within 24 to 48 hours. A greenish-black vaginal discharge is normal immediately after whelping, transitioning to a reddish-brown discharge over the following days. A foul-smelling discharge, persistent heavy bleeding, or signs of illness in the dam warrant immediate veterinary attention.

The dam's nutritional needs during lactation are substantial, often requiring two to three times her normal caloric intake depending on litter size. A high-quality, calorie-dense diet formulated for lactating mothers ensures she can sustain milk production without depleting her own body reserves. Fresh water should be available at all times, as fluid intake is critical for milk production. Some breeders offer supplemental fluids such as diluted goat's milk or low-sodium broth to encourage hydration.

Basenji dams are generally attentive and capable mothers, but first-time mothers may need gentle guidance and reassurance. The breeder should observe nursing sessions to confirm that all puppies are latching and feeding effectively. Puppies that are consistently displaced by stronger siblings may need to be rotated to ensure equal access. Weighing each puppy daily and recording the data provides an objective measure of adequate nutrition.

The whelping area should be kept clean, warm, and draft-free. Bedding should be changed frequently to maintain hygiene and prevent the buildup of bacteria. The dam should be allowed outside briefly for elimination but should not be separated from her puppies for extended periods during the first two weeks. Visitors should be limited to reduce stress on the mother, and young children and unfamiliar animals should be kept away from the whelping area until the puppies are older and more robust.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Responsible breeding is defined not by the number of puppies produced but by the care, intention, and integrity behind every breeding decision. The Basenji is a breed with a relatively small gene pool compared to more popular breeds, which makes thoughtful breeding practices especially important for maintaining genetic diversity and long-term breed health. Every breeding should aim to produce puppies that are healthier, more sound, and more representative of the breed standard than the generation before.

Genetic diversity is a pressing concern in the Basenji community. The breed's foundation stock was imported from Central Africa in limited numbers, and while subsequent importations have introduced new bloodlines, the overall gene pool remains narrow. Breeders have a responsibility to consider coefficient of inbreeding when planning matings and to avoid repeatedly using popular sires, a practice that can rapidly erode genetic diversity across the breed. Consulting pedigree databases and working with breed club genetics committees are practical steps toward more genetically informed breeding decisions.

Transparency is a hallmark of ethical breeding. Responsible breeders share health testing results openly, provide accurate information about their dogs' strengths and weaknesses, and are honest with puppy buyers about what to expect. They offer written health guarantees, maintain lifetime contact with the families who purchase their puppies, and stand ready to take back any dog at any time if the owner can no longer provide care.

The financial reality of responsible breeding should be acknowledged as well. When done properly, breeding rarely generates significant profit. The costs of health testing, prenatal veterinary care, whelping supplies, puppy vaccinations and deworming, registration, and the breeder's time investment typically consume most or all of the income from puppy sales. Individuals who are drawn to breeding as a source of income are unlikely to find it viable when ethical standards are upheld.
