Responsible Akita breeding begins long before any mating takes place. Both the sire and dam should have completed comprehensive health screenings that address the breed's known hereditary conditions. At minimum, this includes hip and elbow evaluations through an orthopedic registry, thyroid function testing for autoimmune thyroiditis, an eye examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist, and any additional genetic tests recommended for the breed. Dogs that do not pass these screenings should not be bred, regardless of their physical beauty or pedigree.

Physical maturity is a prerequisite for breeding readiness, and this extends well beyond the onset of sexual maturity. While female Akitas may experience their first heat cycle as early as six to eight months of age, breeding should not occur until the dog has reached full physical and skeletal maturity, which in a large breed like the Akita is typically no earlier than two years of age. Males should likewise be fully mature before being used at stud, as early breeding can strain an immature body and perpetuate immature physical traits.

Temperament evaluation is an equally important component of breeding readiness that is sometimes overlooked in favor of physical attributes. The Akita's temperament — loyal, courageous, and dignified but potentially reactive — is heavily influenced by genetics. Dogs with unstable temperaments, excessive fearfulness, or unprovoked aggression should not be bred, as these traits are likely to be passed to offspring and create challenges for future owners.

Before committing to a breeding, responsible breeders also evaluate the demand for puppies, secure commitments from qualified homes, and have a plan for any puppies that do not find placement. The Heat Cycle

The female Akita's reproductive cycle, or estrous cycle, typically occurs twice per year, though some individuals may cycle only once annually or at slightly irregular intervals. Each cycle consists of four phases: proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus. Understanding these phases is essential for timing a breeding correctly and recognizing both normal and abnormal reproductive patterns.

Proestrus is the initial phase, lasting approximately seven to ten days, during which the vulva swells and a bloody vaginal discharge appears. The female will attract male dogs during this phase but will typically refuse mating attempts. As the cycle transitions into estrus, the discharge lightens in color and becomes more straw-like, and the female becomes receptive to the male. Pregnancy & Gestation

Akita pregnancy, or gestation, lasts approximately sixty-three days from ovulation, though the range can span from fifty-eight to sixty-eight days depending on the timing of breeding relative to ovulation. Pregnancy can be confirmed by your veterinarian through palpation at approximately twenty-five to twenty-eight days, ultrasound as early as twenty-five days, or radiographs after forty-five days when fetal skeletons have calcified enough to be visible. Radiographs in late pregnancy also provide a puppy count, which is valuable information for monitoring the whelping process.

During the first half of pregnancy, the dam's nutritional needs remain relatively unchanged. Overfeeding during early pregnancy can lead to excessive weight gain that complicates whelping. As pregnancy progresses into the final three to four weeks, caloric demands increase significantly, and the dam should be gradually transitioned to a high-quality puppy food or performance diet that provides the additional protein, fat, and calories needed to support fetal development and prepare for lactation.

Monitor the pregnant Akita's health closely throughout gestation. Moderate exercise should continue during the first several weeks to maintain muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness, tapering to gentle walks as the pregnancy advances. The dam may experience morning sickness around the third week of pregnancy, which usually resolves within a few days. A significant decrease in appetite, lethargy, vaginal discharge, or any other unusual symptoms at any point during pregnancy warrant immediate veterinary evaluation.

As the whelping date approaches, the dam's body temperature should be monitored twice daily. A drop in rectal temperature below approximately ninety-nine degrees Fahrenheit typically signals that whelping will begin within twelve to twenty-four hours. This temperature drop, combined with behavioral signs such as nesting, restlessness, panting, and loss of appetite, indicates that the whelping area should be fully prepared and the breeder should be ready to attend the birth.

Whelping Preparation

Thorough preparation for whelping is essential, particularly with a large breed like the Akita that can produce sizable litters. The whelping box should be large enough for the dam to stretch out comfortably with room for the entire litter, typically at least four feet by four feet with sides high enough to contain the puppies but low enough for the dam to step over easily. Rails or pig bars around the inside perimeter help prevent the dam from accidentally crushing a puppy against the side of the box.

Assemble a whelping supply kit well in advance of the due date. Essential supplies include clean towels, bulb syringes for clearing airways, hemostats or dental floss for clamping umbilical cords, iodine solution for treating cord stumps, a digital scale for weighing puppies, a heating pad or heat lamp, veterinary-approved milk replacer and nursing bottles in case supplementation is needed, and your veterinarian's emergency contact information prominently displayed.

Establish a relationship with a veterinarian experienced in canine reproduction and confirm their availability around the expected whelping date, including after-hours emergency access. Complications during whelping can escalate quickly, and having a veterinary team that knows your dog and is prepared for potential interventions, including emergency cesarean section, can be lifesaving. Akitas may require cesarean delivery if labor stalls, if a puppy is malpositioned, or if the litter is exceptionally large.

Introduce the dam to the whelping area at least one to two weeks before the expected due date so she becomes comfortable in the space. The whelping room should be quiet, warm, private, and easily cleaned. Some dams prefer a dimly lit environment and become stressed by bright lights or excessive activity. Respect the individual dog's preferences while maintaining the ability to monitor the process closely.

Postpartum Care

The first twenty-four to forty-eight hours after whelping demand close monitoring of both the dam and the litter. Ensure that every puppy has nursed and received colostrum, that the dam has passed all placentas (one per puppy), and that she is resting comfortably with the litter. A dark greenish-black vaginal discharge is normal immediately after birth, transitioning to reddish-brown over the following days. Foul-smelling, purulent, or excessively heavy discharge is abnormal and requires veterinary attention, as it may indicate retained placental tissue or uterine infection.

The dam's nutritional demands are now at their peak and will continue to increase through the first three to four weeks of lactation. A nursing Akita with a large litter may require two to four times her normal caloric intake to maintain condition and produce adequate milk. Feed a high-quality puppy food or lactation diet in multiple small meals throughout the day, and ensure constant access to fresh water. Monitor the dam's body condition closely, as rapid weight loss during lactation can compromise milk production and the dam's own health.

Watch the dam's behavior carefully during the postpartum period. Most Akita dams are attentive, protective mothers, but first-time dams may be anxious, clumsy, or unsure about nursing. Excessive restlessness, aggression toward the puppies, refusal to nurse, or failure to clean the puppies are warning signs that require intervention. Eclampsia, a dangerous drop in blood calcium caused by the demands of lactation, can occur in the first few weeks after whelping and presents as tremors, stiffness, panting, and agitation. This is a veterinary emergency requiring immediate treatment.

Schedule a postpartum veterinary examination for the dam within the first few days after whelping. This visit confirms that the uterus is involuting normally, assesses the dam's overall health and recovery, and provides an opportunity to address any concerns about nursing, puppy health, or postpartum complications.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding Akitas carries a profound ethical responsibility that extends far beyond producing puppies. The Akita is a breed with complex temperament traits, significant exercise and management requirements, and predisposition to several hereditary health conditions. Responsible breeders accept the obligation to improve the breed with each generation, producing dogs that are healthier, sounder in temperament, and truer to the breed standard than their parents.

Health testing is the non-negotiable foundation of ethical breeding. Every breeding pair should be screened for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid function, eye conditions, and any other conditions for which validated tests are available. Publishing health testing results through recognized registries promotes transparency and allows puppy buyers to make informed decisions. Breeding dogs that have not been fully health-tested, regardless of their titles, appearance, or pedigree, is a disservice to the breed and to future puppy owners.

Responsible breeders maintain lifetime responsibility for every puppy they produce. This includes thorough screening and education of prospective buyers, written contracts that require the breeder to be contacted first if the owner can no longer keep the dog, health guarantees, and ongoing support and mentorship for puppy buyers. The Akita's complex temperament means that not every home is a suitable match, and a responsible breeder is willing to say no to a prospective buyer who is not adequately prepared for the breed.

The decision to breed should never be motivated primarily by profit, convenience, or the desire to let a pet experience parenthood. The financial realities of responsible breeding — including health testing, quality nutrition, veterinary care, whelping supplies, and the potential for emergency interventions — often result in little to no profit per litter. Ethical breeders breed because they are dedicated to preserving and improving the Akita for future generations, and they approach each breeding decision with the seriousness and deliberation that this commitment demands.
