Before any mating is considered, both the queen and the stud should undergo comprehensive health screening that includes a full physical examination, blood work, screening for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, and a thorough evaluation of spinal and neurological health. The Cymric's Manx gene introduces unique risks that make health screening not just advisable but essential.

Physical maturity is a separate consideration from sexual maturity. While a Cymric queen may experience her first estrus as early as five to six months of age, she should not be bred until she has reached full physical maturity, which for this slow-developing breed is typically not before eighteen months to two years of age. Breeding an immature queen puts her health at risk and can result in smaller, weaker litters.

The breeder should also evaluate temperament carefully. Cymrics selected for breeding should exhibit the breed's characteristic gentle, sociable, and confident personality. Cats that are excessively fearful, aggressive, or anxious are poor candidates for a breeding program regardless of their physical conformation, since temperament has a significant heritable component.

Finally, any responsible breeding program requires a clear plan for every kitten produced. During the first few weeks of pregnancy, the queen may show few outward changes. A slight increase in appetite and a tendency to seek out quiet resting spots are often the earliest indicators. By the fourth week, the nipples become pinker and more prominent, a change known as pinking up. Weight gain becomes noticeable from the fifth week onward, and by the final two weeks the queen's abdomen is visibly distended.

Nutrition during pregnancy should shift to a high-quality kitten food or a diet specifically formulated for gestation and lactation. The caloric and protein demands increase significantly during the latter half of pregnancy, and the queen should be fed freely rather than on a restricted schedule. Queening Preparation

Introduce the queen to the queening box several days before the expected due date so she becomes comfortable with the space. Place her bedding or a worn item of your clothing inside to make the area smell familiar. Some queens will choose an entirely different location to deliver despite your preparations, so remain flexible while gently encouraging use of the designated spot.

Know the signs of approaching labor. In the 24 to 48 hours before delivery, the queen's body temperature typically drops below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, she may refuse food, become restless, and begin nesting behavior such as rearranging bedding. Active labor is marked by visible contractions and the eventual delivery of the first kitten, which should occur within an hour of strong contractions beginning. Postpartum Care

After all kittens have been delivered and the queen has expelled the afterbirth for each kitten, allow the family to rest undisturbed. The queen should begin cleaning and nursing the kittens promptly. Count the placentas to ensure none have been retained, as retained placental tissue can cause a life-threatening uterine infection. If you cannot account for all placentas, notify your veterinarian.

Monitor the queen closely for the first 48 hours. A moderate amount of dark reddish-brown vaginal discharge is normal for up to a week after delivery. Discharge that is bright red, foul-smelling, or accompanied by fever, lethargy, or loss of appetite indicates a potential complication and requires veterinary attention. Eclampsia, a dangerous drop in blood calcium caused by the demands of milk production, can occur in the days following delivery and presents as restlessness, stiffness, tremors, or seizures.

The queen's nutritional needs during lactation are the highest of any life stage. She should have unlimited access to a calorie-dense, high-protein kitten food and fresh water. Some queens lose significant body condition during nursing, and supplemental feeding may be necessary to prevent excessive weight loss.

Keep the queening area clean, warm, and quiet. Change bedding daily or whenever soiled. Limit visitors and handling of the kittens during the first week to reduce stress on the queen. Weigh each kitten daily at the same time to track growth, and consult your veterinarian if any kitten fails to gain weight or appears weak or lethargic.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

The Cymric presents one of the most ethically complex breeding challenges in the cat world. The gene responsible for taillessness is a dominant mutation that is lethal in the homozygous state, meaning kittens that inherit two copies of the gene die in utero, typically very early in development. This is why Cymric litters are often small and why breeders must never mate two completely tailless cats together. Responsible breeders pair tailless cats with tailed or stumpy-tailed partners to minimize the proportion of affected embryos.

Manx syndrome, the spectrum of spinal defects associated with the taillessness gene, adds another ethical dimension. Kittens can be born with varying degrees of spinal malformation, from mild shortening of the spine with no functional impact to severe spina bifida, fused vertebrae, and bowel or bladder dysfunction. Experienced breeders assess each kitten's spinal health carefully in the first weeks of life and make difficult but compassionate decisions about kittens with severe defects.

Genetic diversity is a concern in any breeding program, but it is particularly relevant for the Cymric, which has a relatively small gene pool. Breeders should maintain detailed pedigree records, avoid excessive linebreeding, and seek outcross opportunities where registry rules permit. Inbreeding depression can manifest as reduced litter sizes, weakened immune function, and increased prevalence of genetic disorders.

Every breeder must also contend with the reality of surplus animals. Even the most carefully planned litter produces kittens that may not meet show or breeding standards. A responsible breeder places these kittens in loving pet homes with spay or neuter agreements, provides lifetime support to buyers, and never contributes to the population of unwanted cats.
