Cats are induced ovulators, meaning that ovulation is triggered by the physical act of mating rather than occurring spontaneously. If ovulation occurs but conception does not, a pseudopregnancy lasting approximately 35 to 40 days may follow before the queen cycles again.

Pregnancy & Gestation

Gestation in the Balinese lasts approximately 63 to 67 days from the date of successful mating, though slight variation is normal. Pregnancy can be confirmed by a veterinarian through abdominal palpation at approximately three to four weeks, or via ultrasound as early as day 21 to 25. The second stage of labor begins with visible abdominal contractions and the delivery of kittens. Balinese litters typically range from three to six kittens. Each kitten is usually delivered within thirty to sixty minutes of active straining, though intervals can vary. Kittens may be born head-first or tail-first, and both presentations are normal. The queen will typically break the amniotic sac, sever the umbilical cord, and vigorously clean each kitten to stimulate breathing. Postpartum Care

The first 48 hours after delivery are a critical monitoring period for both the queen and her kittens. Eclampsia, or puerperal hypocalcemia, is a veterinary emergency that can occur during the first few weeks of lactation, particularly in queens nursing large litters. Signs include muscle tremors, stiff gait, restlessness, panting, and in severe cases, seizures. This condition requires immediate intravenous calcium administration by a veterinarian and can be fatal if untreated. Do not supplement calcium during pregnancy without veterinary guidance, as inappropriate supplementation can paradoxically increase eclampsia risk.

Responsible Breeding Ethics
