Galahs are remarkably resilient birds that can maintain a convincing appearance of normalcy even as serious disease progresses internally, making the identification of irreversible decline both critically important and genuinely difficult. The transition from manageable aging to active dying is not always marked by a single dramatic event. More often, it is a pattern of accumulating losses that, viewed together, tell a story the caregiver must be willing to hear.
The most telling indicators of terminal decline are persistent weight loss that does not respond to dietary intervention, progressive loss of interest in food and water, an inability to maintain normal body temperature without external heat support, and a marked reduction in activity that goes beyond the typical slowing of old age. A Galah that once rested more but still engaged with its environment on its own terms is aging. A Galah that sits motionless on the cage floor, no longer attempts to reach its perch, and shows little or no response to stimuli that previously elicited interest is in a different category entirely.
Respiratory deterioration is a common component of terminal decline in aging cockatoos. Labored breathing, tail bobbing that is visible even at rest, open-mouth breathing, and audible respiratory sounds such as wheezing, clicking, or gurgling indicate that the respiratory system is no longer functioning adequately. In birds with advanced atherosclerosis or heart disease, these respiratory symptoms may be accompanied by episodes of sudden weakness, loss of balance, or brief periods of apparent disorientation that suggest compromised blood flow to the brain.
Neurological changes may also become apparent during terminal decline. A bird that develops a head tilt, circling behavior, seizures, loss of coordination, or an inability to grip a perch may be experiencing stroke-like events, progressive organ failure affecting the brain, or central nervous system involvement from an underlying disease. These changes are distressing to witness and often signal that the bird's decline has reached a stage where curative intervention is no longer realistic. Consultation with an avian veterinarian at this point should focus on honest assessment of prognosis and the transition to palliative care goals.
