Responsible breeders typically wait until both the hen and the cock are at least four to five years old before pairing them for breeding.
Determining the sex of a Rose-Breasted Cockatoo is relatively straightforward compared to many parrot species, as Galahs exhibit subtle but reliable sexual dimorphism in eye color once they reach maturity. Adult males typically have very dark brown to near-black irises, while adult females develop a distinctly lighter, pinkish-red or reddish-brown iris. This difference becomes apparent by approximately two to three years of age and remains consistent throughout the bird's life. Surgical sexing and DNA sexing are also available and provide definitive confirmation, with DNA sexing being the less invasive option, requiring only a blood sample or a freshly plucked feather.
Before any breeding is attempted, both prospective parent birds should undergo comprehensive veterinary screening. This includes a full physical examination, complete blood work, fecal analysis, and testing for transmissible diseases including Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, Polyomavirus, and Chlamydia psittaci. Breeding birds with undiagnosed health conditions puts the hen at risk during egg production and incubation, compromises the health of any resulting chicks, and can introduce or perpetuate disease within the captive population. Both birds should be at their ideal body weight, neither underweight nor obese, as either extreme reduces fertility and increases the risk of breeding complications.
The hormonal triggers for breeding in captive Galahs are influenced by photoperiod, diet, environmental stimuli, and the presence of a compatible mate. In the Southern Hemisphere, wild Galahs typically breed between July and December, but captive birds in the Northern Hemisphere may shift their breeding season to align with local light cycles. Increased daylight hours, access to protein-rich and calcium-rich foods, the presence of a nest box, and the behavioral cues of a bonded partner all contribute to bringing a pair into breeding condition.
