The juvenile phase of a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo begins around weaning, typically between ten and fourteen weeks of age, and extends through the first two to three years. During this period, the bird undergoes a remarkable physical transformation from a somewhat awkward fledgling into a fully feathered and increasingly coordinated young cockatoo. Growth in overall body size slows compared to the explosive neonatal period, but feather development, muscle strengthening, and beak maturation continue at a steady pace.
The first full molt usually occurs sometime between six and twelve months of age. During this molt, the juvenile plumage is gradually replaced by the brilliant white adult feathers and the characteristic sulphur-yellow crest becomes more prominent and defined. Molting is an energy-intensive process, and the bird may appear slightly ragged or patchy as old feathers are shed and new ones grow in. Pin feathers during a molt can cause mild discomfort, and the bird may be more sensitive to handling around areas of active feather growth.
Physical coordination improves dramatically during the juvenile period. The young cockatoo refines its ability to climb, perch confidently on various surfaces, and develop the powerful beak dexterity that this species is known for. Flight skills, if the bird is flighted, are practiced and honed through increasingly confident aerial maneuvers. Even wing-clipped birds will exercise their wings vigorously and develop the chest musculature necessary for strong flight capability.
Beak development is particularly notable in juvenile cockatoos. The beak continues to harden and the bird begins exploring its destructive potential with increasing enthusiasm. This is the stage when owners first discover just how powerful a cockatoo's beak can be, as the young bird tests its strength on toys, perches, cage bars, furniture, and anything else within reach. This chewing behavior is entirely normal and essential for beak conditioning and jaw muscle development.
