Blue-Crowned Conure chicks hatch after an incubation period of approximately 24 to 26 days, emerging as tiny, nearly helpless creatures covered in sparse white down. A healthy newborn typically weighs between 6 and 8 grams, with closed eyes, oversized feet, and translucent pinkish skin visible beneath the thin natal down. The chick's immediate needs are warmth and its first feeding, both of which must be addressed within a carefully controlled timeframe to give the newborn the strongest possible start.
In parent-raised clutches, the hen will begin feeding the chick within the first few hours after hatching. The regurgitated crop contents she provides deliver essential nutrients, digestive enzymes, and beneficial microflora that colonize the chick's gastrointestinal tract. For hand-raised chicks, the first feeding should be delayed until the yolk sac has been fully absorbed, which generally occurs between 8 and 12 hours post-hatch. Offering formula before yolk absorption is complete can overwhelm the immature digestive system and lead to bacterial infection or crop stasis.
The brooder must be set up and stabilized well before the anticipated hatch date. Temperatures should be maintained between 95 and 97 degrees Fahrenheit for the first 24 hours, with relative humidity held at 60 to 65 percent. Blue-Crowned Conure chicks are particularly sensitive to temperature drops during their first day of life because their small body mass provides almost no thermal insulation. Even a brief chill can suppress the feeding response and trigger a cascade of metabolic problems.
During this critical window, observe the chick for signs of vitality. A healthy newborn will exhibit a feeding response when the area around its beak is gently touched, its skin will be uniformly pink without dark spots or discoloration, and it will make soft vocalizations when stimulated. Any chick that fails to respond to feeding cues, displays labored breathing, or has an unabsorbed yolk sac protruding from the abdomen after 12 hours requires immediate evaluation by an avian veterinarian.
