Biting is one of the most common behavioral concerns during the juvenile phase. Young conures explore the world with their beaks, and they are also testing social boundaries. It is important to distinguish between exploratory mouthing, which is gentle and investigative, and true biting, which involves force and is often accompanied by body language cues such as pinning eyes, raised feathers, or lunging. Respond to exploratory mouthing with calm redirection, offering an appropriate chew toy. Respond to biting by calmly and immediately withdrawing attention, setting the bird down, and turning away for 30 to 60 seconds. A juvenile conure that is held or entertained constantly will come to expect constant attention and may develop separation anxiety or excessive contact-calling when left alone. Build structured periods of independent play into the daily routine, providing foraging toys, shreddable materials, and puzzle feeders that keep the bird mentally engaged without direct human interaction. Gradually increasing the duration of these independent periods helps the bird develop self-sufficiency and emotional resilience.

Training Foundations

The juvenile stage is the optimal window for establishing the training fundamentals that will shape a Blue-Crowned Conure's responsiveness and cooperative behavior throughout its life. Young conures are naturally curious and eager to interact, which makes them highly receptive to positive reinforcement training. Building a strong training foundation now pays dividends for decades, as behaviors learned during this developmental period tend to be deeply ingrained and resistant to extinction.

Begin with the step-up command, which is the single most important behavior for any companion parrot. Present your hand or a perch at the bird's lower chest level and say the chosen cue word in a calm, consistent tone. Blue-Crowned Conures are among the better talkers in the conure family, and the juvenile stage is when vocal learning is most active. Repeat target words and phrases clearly and consistently during calm, focused interaction sessions. Associate specific words with relevant contexts, saying the word when the corresponding action or object is present. Short, high-pitched words and phrases are typically learned first. While not every Blue-Crowned Conure will develop an extensive vocabulary, most will acquire at least a handful of words and phrases with consistent, patient training.

Keep all training sessions short, positive, and free of frustration. End each session on a success, even if it means returning to a simpler behavior the bird already knows well. Never use punishment, force, or flooding techniques, which involve overwhelming the bird with a feared stimulus. These approaches destroy trust and create lasting behavioral damage. The goal of juvenile training is not obedience but a cooperative relationship built on mutual communication and positive association.

Veterinary Care & Ongoing Health

The juvenile period brings its own set of health considerations that require attentive monitoring and a continued relationship with a qualified avian veterinarian. The transition from formula to solid food, the physical demands of fledging, and the stress of adaptation to a new home environment all create windows of vulnerability that caregivers must watch closely.

A comprehensive juvenile wellness examination should be scheduled shortly after the bird is fully weaned, or at the time of acquisition if the bird is being purchased from a breeder or store.
