In snakes, dermatophytosis affects the skin and scales, causing superficial infection that typically remains localized to the integument without systemic spread. Several genera of dermatophytes can infect reptiles, including Trichophyton, Microsporum, and others. While less commonly diagnosed in snakes than in mammals, dermatophytosis represents an important differential diagnosis for any snake presenting with skin abnormalities and carries zoonotic potential, meaning it can be transmitted to humans.
Dermatophytosis can affect any snake species, though it is diagnosed less frequently than some other skin conditions. The infection typically develops when dermatophyte spores contact susceptible skin, particularly when the integument is damaged or the snake's immune defenses are compromised. Ball pythons, boa constrictors, corn snakes, and other commonly kept species can all develop dermatophytosis under appropriate conditions. The organism's preference for keratin-rich tissues like skin and scales makes the reptile integument a suitable substrate for fungal growth once infection is established.
The impact of dermatophytosis on snake health is generally moderate compared to more invasive fungal infections. Dermatophytes typically remain superficial, infecting the outer layers of skin and scales without penetrating deeply into tissues. This superficial nature means that systemic illness is rare, and the infection primarily causes cosmetic and integumentary problems. However, damaged skin can serve as a portal for secondary bacterial infection, and extensive dermatophytosis can interfere with normal shedding. The zoonotic potential of dermatophyte infections also makes diagnosis and treatment important for protecting human caretakers.
Treatment of dermatophytosis in snakes is generally successful with appropriate antifungal therapy. Both topical and systemic antifungal medications may be used depending on the extent of infection. Correction of any underlying predisposing factors such as husbandry deficiencies or immunosuppression improves treatment success. Prevention focuses on maintaining good husbandry, quarantining new acquisitions, and avoiding exposure to infected animals or contaminated environments. Snake keepers should practice good hygiene to reduce personal risk of acquiring dermatophyte infection from affected snakes.
