CANV, an acronym for Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii, represents a serious fungal infection caused by organisms in the Nannizziopsis, Paranannizziopsis, and Ophidiomyces complexes that affect reptiles including snakes. While the terminology has evolved as understanding of these organisms has improved, CANV is commonly used to describe dermatomycosis caused by these related pathogenic fungi. These organisms are primary pathogens, meaning they can cause disease in otherwise healthy reptiles, unlike many fungal infections that only affect immunocompromised hosts. CANV-related infections have gained increasing recognition in the reptile veterinary community as serious and challenging conditions.
While CANV was initially most frequently diagnosed in bearded dragons, where it causes the characteristic yellow fungus disease, related organisms increasingly are recognized in snakes and other reptile species. Ball pythons, boa constrictors, and various colubrid species have all been diagnosed with infections caused by these fungi. The epidemiology in snakes is still being elucidated, but evidence suggests these infections may be more common than previously recognized. Environmental factors, immune status, and exposure to contaminated environments or infected animals all play roles in disease development.
The impact of CANV and related fungal infections on snake health is significant and can be devastating. These fungi invade the skin and scale tissues, causing progressive destruction that can lead to secondary bacterial infection, systemic spread, and death. Unlike superficial fungal infections, CANV organisms penetrate deeply into tissues, making treatment challenging. The infection typically begins as localized skin lesions but can spread across the body surface and eventually invade deeper structures including muscle, bone, and internal organs. Without treatment, the disease is often fatal.
Treatment of CANV in snakes requires aggressive, prolonged antifungal therapy and is often challenging even with optimal care. Early detection offers the best chance for successful treatment, but the cryptic nature of illness in snakes means diagnosis often comes when disease is already advanced. Prevention through quarantine, good hygiene, and avoiding exposure to infected animals is critical. Any snake with suspicious skin lesions should be evaluated promptly by a snake-experienced veterinarian, as early intervention is essential for the best possible outcome.
