Biotin deficiency is a nutritional disorder that occurs when snakes do not receive adequate biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, in their diet. This essential B vitamin plays critical roles in numerous metabolic processes including fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and glucose regulation. Biotin is also essential for maintaining healthy skin and scales in reptiles, making deficiency particularly visible through integumentary signs. Unlike some nutritional deficiencies that develop slowly over long periods, biotin deficiency can develop relatively quickly when snakes consume substances that interfere with biotin absorption.
The most common cause of biotin deficiency in captive snakes is the consumption of raw egg whites. Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin that binds biotin with extremely high affinity, preventing its absorption in the digestive tract. Snakes fed diets that include raw eggs, particularly egg whites, as a significant component are at risk for developing biotin deficiency. This situation is most likely to occur in snakes that have been trained to accept eggs as prey substitutes or in cases where keepers supplement the diet with raw eggs without understanding the associated risks.
Biotin deficiency affects multiple body systems, with skin and scale abnormalities often being the most visible manifestations. Affected snakes may develop dull, unhealthy-appearing scales, shedding abnormalities, and skin lesions. Neurological effects can also occur as biotin is involved in normal nervous system function. The condition can progress to affect overall health and vitality if not addressed, though it is generally reversible when caught before permanent damage occurs.
Recognition of biotin deficiency requires awareness of dietary risk factors and attention to subtle clinical signs. Snake keepers feeding eggs or egg-containing diets should be particularly vigilant for signs of deficiency. Veterinary evaluation and appropriate supplementation can reverse deficiency when diagnosed, but prevention through proper dietary management is far preferable to treatment after deficiency develops. Consultation with a snake-experienced veterinarian is important for any snake showing signs suggestive of nutritional deficiency.
