The bacteria are widespread in the environment and can contaminate food sources, making exposure possible through various routes including diet, environmental contamination, and contact with infected animals or their feces.
The impact of salmonellosis on small mammal health ranges from asymptomatic carriage to severe, potentially fatal gastrointestinal and systemic disease. Acute infections cause enteritis with diarrhea, dehydration, and systemic inflammation that can rapidly prove fatal in small mammals with limited physiological reserves. Chronic carriage without clinical signs occurs commonly, with animals shedding bacteria intermittently and serving as infection sources for other animals and humans. Septicemia may develop when bacteria enter the bloodstream, affecting multiple organ systems and carrying high mortality. The stress of illness, transport, or environmental changes can activate clinical disease in previously asymptomatic carriers.
Treatment of clinical salmonellosis focuses primarily on supportive care including fluid therapy and nutritional support, with antibiotics reserved for severe cases or those with systemic involvement due to concerns about promoting carrier states and antibiotic resistance. The zoonotic nature of this infection requires veterinary care from practitioners aware of public health implications and able to counsel owners on appropriate precautions. Prevention through proper food handling, hygiene practices, and source selection is preferred over treating established infections.
